Diz IN THR, Hosrrtat A whey man named
Ferdinand Michaud, aged about twenty-six years,
died in thé County Hospieal'on: Saturday morning
last, of typhoid fever, He had been. sick about two
weeks, and was admitted inte.the . hospital three or
four days previous'to his death: He wasa native
of. D’Epx, France, where his relatives now reside,
SPRAKING at WaSHINGTON.—We learn that
H. M. Moore,. one of the Breekinridge Assembly
nominees for this’ county, addressed a political
meeting at Washington oneevening last week. He
‘was answered by Geo. A, Young, who took the
Wind out of his sails pretty effectually, as we are informed. —
~ Doceisu.—A difficulty occurred at Orleans Flat,
on Wedtiesday last, between a man named Islimael
and a Scotchman whose name we did not learn.
Ishmael knocked the Scotchman down witha chair,
after which they clinched, and in the scuffle the
Scotchman. bit off the fore-finger of Ishiacl’s right
hand.
»,On Dit--That a Breckinridge campaign paper is
shortly to make its appearance in Nevada, to be ed.
ited by C.F, Smith, Esq., late of the Grass Valley
National. Mr. Smith, we understand, has gone
over to the Breckinridge party. The first number
will be issued on Saturday next.
PoLricaL Diserssion.—We learn that Judge .
Searls, of Nevada, and A. B. Dibble, Esq., of Grass
Valley, have arranged to hold a political discussion
at Allison’s Ranch, on Saturday evening, October
6th—Searls for Breckinridge, Dibble for Douglas.
Benkert's Boots.—Messrs. Mayers & Coe have
jast received at their store on Main street, direct
from Philadelphia, several trunks of Benkert’s
quilted-bottom boots, inanufactured to their order,
expressly for the Nevada market.
Newsparenr Favons.—We are indebted to Mr.
Pattison, of the Pioneer Express, for the Downie+
ville papers of Saturday; also, to Mr. Stone for the
Marysville Appeal, regularly furnished during the
week,
APPOINTMENTS.—Hon. Jas. A. MeDougall and
Hon. J, W. McCorkle are announced to speak at
Grass Valley on Tuesday evening, Oct. 2d, and at
Nevada on Wednesday evening Oct. 3d.
Day or ATONEMENT.—To-day, Sept. 26th, is the
Jewish Day of Atonement. Itis the most sacred .
day.in the Jewish calendar,
served by that people, the world over.
Grass VaLuny Stace.--Frank Cleveland, the
popular driver, has again taken charge ofthe Nevada and Grass Valley stage line.
Rev. W. Grove Deat, will. sueceed the Rev.

Maine Ex.xorion.—The election for State offcers and members of Congress, in Maine, took
place Sept. 10th. The vote is thought to be the
largest ever polled in that State, Returns
from one hundred and sixteen towns give
Wasbburne, (Rep.) 33,485; Smart, (Dem.) 23,841; Barnes, (Union,) 1,020. These figures
ebow a Republican ,ain of about 2,000 over the
vote of last year. The Republican candidates
for Congress are probably all elected, though
there is a possibility that two of the Democratic
candidates may have been successful. The
Democratic candidates in Maine were all friends
of Douglas, and the fight was made, asin 1860,
on Popular Sovereignty principles. The prob.
ability is that Maine will go for Lincola in Nowember. It went for Fremont in 1856.
A Nortu Caroiina Secuper Resuxep.—Gen.
erat Thomas Jeffereor. “treen, a member of the
first California State Sciate, and the projector
of the immense paper totus of “Oro,”’ bas been .
beaten for the ‘orth Carolina Senate by Dr.
Pichford, of th: Warren district. The General
was @ prominen!, ~ ‘.eeder at Baltimore, and intreduced Joe L:ne as a candidate for the Vice
Presidency. He afterwards induced old Joe to
visit North Carolina ona stumping tour, and)
acted as host during his sojourn there, and now
the ungrateful people of the old North State .
have defeated him in his political aspiratione.
The General will soon be on the move again,
for some locality where be is sot known.
!
Mr. Ursox, cditor of the Union, has taken s.
trip to Washoe, for the benefit of his health. .
He went by way of Placerville, and purposes
returning by the Hennese Pass, and will thas be
enavled to form some idea of the comparative
advantages of the two routes.
Tue Kise or Napies.—Late intelligence from
Europe say nothing about the King of Naples
having fied from kis dominions. The report)
that he had left Naples on board the frigate
Stromales, was doubtless unfounded.
Tax steumer Great Eastern is said to have
cleared $60,000 by her late trip fo New York.
. All these stores are occupied by busy merchants, whose stocks of goods
have been selected with great care, not only in San
Franeisco, but in the Ent, many of their goods be.
ing importations direct from the Atlantic and European markets. I must confess I saw fewer unoccupied stores in Nevada, ~~ any other place outside
of San Francisco, that I have been in for a long .
time. Improvements too, seemed to be steadily .
fr ngon. At the left hand side of the upper end of
oad street, a large three stury brick hotel was being erected by a Mr. Baily, which when finished will
be'a credit to'the place. © * be T believe that
ven old days of prosperity will return to Nevada, and
soaps memory’s kept green for those who
ished, and lie in the little grave yard on the hill side,
alt else of the saddening devastation will be forgotten.
.
THe EMiGRrailon—The Stockton Republican .
says that quite a large number of emigrants daily
pass throu “gb that town on their way to the lower
valleys. Theirstock, generally, is in condition, and a more choice selection than heretofore.
At present prices, it hardly pays to drive other than
blooded Bock 3 across tne plains.
Prize Rone ~The Amador Ledger says that a
prize fight took place at Muletown, in that county,
Sept. 16th, between John Leonard and John Glen
for $250 a side. Sixteen rounds were fought, toa
Leonard was peclaned the victor.

Sand®# Sarsapartita—For Purifyiog the Blood—
Health depends almost entirely upon the state of the
blood.. If the vitalizing fluid which pervades every tissue
membrane, fibre. filament, gland or other organ, primary
and subsidiary, be charged with the elemcnte of disease,
sickness must be tle consequence, and until the cause is
eradicated, no permanent relief can be expected. It is
here that the powerful health restoring properties of
SANDS’ SARSAPARILLA are manifested ;
operation reaches the gurm of disease, and the cures it performa are therefore radical and thorough. Read the tes.
