NEVADA COUNTY MINING REVIEW The present grocery and provision business conWATT & CO. ducted by Watt & Co. is one of the oldest and most reliable houses in the city. It was established in 1855 by Thomas Findley, afterward State treasurer, and was next conducted by Findley & Clarke, Cal. R. Clarke, late county assessor, purchasing a halfinterest in the store. The firm next became Clarke & Pettis, and at the expiration of about a year Adams, McNeill & Co. purchased the business and conducted it for two years. At the end of this time they sold out to Samuel Granger, who also ran the business for two years before selling a half interest to David Watt. The firm then became Granger & Watt and was afterward changed to Watt & Co., as at present. Samuel Granger, the senior member of the firm, is a native of Portland, Maine, where he was born in 1836. He caine to California in 1855, and resided for ten yearsat Forest City, Sierra County. Here he mined until 1859, when he went into the general merchandise business. He came to Grass Valley in December, 1866, engaging in the same business, and has continued since. Mr. Granger has never sought public office, although serving as a member of the board of city trustees forsome time. He is interested in many mining properties and takes an active part in public enterprises. Mr. Granger resides at the corner of Main and School Streets. James Watt, the junior member of the firm, is a native of Edinburgh, Scotland, and was born in 1846. He came to Grass Valley in 1869, and in 1870 his father, David Watt, purchased an interest in the grocery business conducted by Samuel Granger. James Watt entered the employ of the firm as clerk and accountant, and in oN 1883, upon the death of David Watt, he entered the firm as a co-partner. Mr, Watt is an expert accountant and is prominent in musical and sociab circles. He resides in a comfortable home on Bean Street. t Probably noenterprise inaugurated in Grass Valley A. H. GRISWOLD during the past year will give employment to more people, or is more thoroughly appreciated, than the Twin City Steam Laundry, of which A. H. Griswold is proprietor. This laundry is one of the most complete in the State and has all the latest Troy machinery. It may be said that the modern steam laundry had its birth in the city of Troy, New York, for it was there that the first improved steam laundry was operated. The Twin City Laundry has one of the finest outfits on the Pacific Coast, and employs four men and thirteen ladies. It occupies the entire floor space of the large Uphoff building, in Boston Ravine, and secures its work from this city, Nevada City and all the surrounding towns, including Colfax in Placer County, and Smartsville in Yuba County. The work turned out of this establishment is second to none, and the charges are reasonable. A. H. Griswold, Esq., the proprietor, came to Grass Valley from Wadsworth, Nevada. Mr. Griswold is a native of New York State, but was raised in Omaha, Nebraska. He was engaged in.the laundry business in the latter city and thoroughly understands every detail. = ty) Po Me ped RON IS ee : 51h TS 106 ..
