NEVADA COUNTY MINING REVIEW attention has been paid to quartz mining since the cessation of hydraulic mining, and the mines that have been opened have paid well. In the Meadow Lake district, six thousand feet above the sea level, are found large bodies of quartz, which have not been worked at a profit for some years, owing to the refractory nature of the ores. This district, however, is said to have produced £300,000 from its quartz mines during the early days of the famous Meadow Lake boom. THE SOIL AND ITS PRODUCTS As the object of this review is to place before the world a truthful synopsis of Nevada county’s mineral resources, & detailed statement of its agricultural and horticultural products will not be permitted. But these industries are of too much importance to be entirely overlooked, and a short account of the same will doubtless be interesting to the general reader. The soil of Nevada County, when properly cultivated, is capable of producing large crops of all kinds of cereals and fruits without the aid of irrigation. Wherever irrigation has been used, the TZ .. product has been greatly accelerated. Lands for general farming can be purchased at reasonable prices, ranging from $5 to $150 per acre. The red soil of the sidehills is particularly adapted to raising fruits and vines, and the table grapes grown in Nevada County are par excellence. In the valleys, such as Penn valley and Pleasant valley, hay and grain flourish exceedingly well, and the raising of red-top clover and alfalfa hay is one of the most profitable industries. The home market is the very best, affording good prices for all products grown by the local farmers. Rye, wheat, oats, and especially rye, can be successfully grown and made toyield large crops. Raisin and wine grapes can also be profitably grown, and all the fruits of the temperate zone can be produced to perfection. Citrus fruits grow along the western boundary, and the apple reaches its highest state of cultivation in size, flavor and keeping qualities. The cost of an orchard is not great, and an abundance of water can be secured in almost every part of the county for irrigation purposes, at a cost of about $5 for each acre irrigated. Nevada County offers inducements to the homeseeker in cheap lands, sure crops, good markets, and a climate whose salubrity cannot be excelled.
