It will be a most auspicious way of beginning the new year. Our population has, toa great extent. lost iis once rude and incongruvus materia's, and new presents quite different characteristics, from those which prevailed two and three years since. Then vagabondism boldly presented itself at the corners of our Streets, and ventured to appear even in the very midst of society. Now things are widely changed, and vice and immorality are found lurking mostly in by-places, fearing the open sunlight of day, and standing abashed before the moral fuce of the community. The change isa most happy one. One thing only is now lacking to place Grass Valley in the very front rank of the great work of moral reform. so mucb needed aad so loudly called for vy bo'h the press and people of this State—that is, a Christ"aa observance of the Sabba'. Inthe schedule. Nevada couniy is set down wiih a colored population of 4090. representing $.50.000. It is also believed that the colored people of the State, in proportion to their numbers. have been the least recipienis-of public chariiy of any class of people in California.
With regard to ibis County we have the best reason for beliving these facts to be strictly correct. On enquiry, we leara that in this portioa of the county alone, exclusive of Nevada, and all the district beyond, there are 54 who have purchased their freedom in this country. These persons have paid their former masters in the aggregate, $95,800 in labor, and $16950 in cash, making a total of $112,750.— These same 54 individuals are now worth $11.000 in money, or property. at its cash BY Wha wall far tha indsar tion, and affords pretty good evidence of their capacity not only for attending to all their present wants, but also to provide for any future contingency. We its Farco & Co have been prompt in their attentions the past week. and have kept us regularly supplied with, San Francisco. Sacramenio and Marysville papers. They will please accept thanks for their “‘continuance in well doing.”’ This firm has also placed us under obligations for Atlantic papers by the last steamer. JS Quite an animated contest took place on Friday last betwaen the rival news men, in this place, to see who should be ahead with papers. Express riders were sent out to meet the stuges on both the Auburn and Jobnson roads. The princ’pal contest was on ihe Auburn road where the siuges were met at the Globe Ranch, about 10 miles from this place. Witkowski, we learn, got his packages first ; but his express rider unfortunately plunged bis horse into an ugly mud hole, which delayed bim so long that his rival— ‘Kendall,’ of Langton’s Express—arrived in town a long while ahead aud was the first to place us in possession of Atlantic papers. Jounx Grssoy, an insane man, who was recenily taken from this place to the Stockton Asylum, found means to effeci his escape, a few days since, and made his way back.— He was again taken in custody on Saturday last, by Mr. Goad, and lodged in jail, where he will be kept until a new order can be had for his return to the asylum. He effected his escape from the asylum by tying his bed blankets together and letiing himself down from the third story. Stace Accomopatiox.—The California Stage Co. now run a daily line of coaches’ direct be!ween this p'ace and Sacramento, to ac-omodate the travel to and from this point. Mr. Kendall ‘has occupied quite an important position in . _ the political history of the couniry for the . last thirty years. __ A Token or Remewprance.—At one of the first audiences given by the Emperor Napoteon 111. to Lord Cowly the English ambas. sador, he drew out of a desk the policeman’s. staff which he had carried when he went on his beatin Regent street, aad said it had Htowed his fortunes ever since. — fachex" enerey of fuat class of our popula‘lates the particulars of a \pleasant dinner . , last year, occupies a territory a little larger . . climate is mild and its soil fertile. “Later from the Atlant ic States. thé Mail Steamer Golden Age arrived at San Francisco, on’ Friday.last with two sonceived and garbled ndtice of the © Ris. @ weeks later dates.
