ARRIVAL OF THE CORTEZ.
LATER FROM THE STATES AND EvROPE.
By the arrival of the Cortez, we are in receipt of New York papers of the 20th, containing highly interesting and important
news, a brief compilation of which we give
below.
We see from the New York Herald, that
the Mitchel banquet took place at the Broadway theatre on Monday, December 19th.
Some six hundred people sat down to dinner,
and the boxes were filled with as many ladies.
Charles O’Connor, Esq., presided, and speeches were made by Messrs. Mitchell, Meagher,
O’Gorman and Smyth.
It is thought that Secretary Davis will be
elected United States Senator from Mississippi, and that Hon. Charles Q McDonald will
be placed at the head of the War DepartmentFrom accounts from Mexico, it was thought
that the movements of the Fillibusters was
rather calculated to enhance, than retard the
advances of Santa Anna to imperialism.

ANOTHER AwFtL ConFLAGRATION.-—The
extensive and world renowned publication office of Harper & Brother, together with the
entire establishment has been burned to the .
ground. Their entire loss is estimated at
$800,000, insurance $250,000. But little delay will be occasioned in the regular publication of books, periodicals, &e. &c. So much
for enterprise.
WEATHER THROUGHOUT THE COUNTRY.
CLEVELAND, Dee. 19, 1853.
It has been snowing here all day, and is
very cold and blustering to-night—the wind
blowing a perfect gale.
om Detsxoir, Dec. 19, 1853.
We have about three inches of snow on the
ground here. The weather is clear and not
very cold.
Burraro, Dec. 19, 1853.
A snow storm sct in here on Saturday night,
and we have now eight inches of snow on
the ground. The weather is very clear and
fine. The thermometer yesterday morning
was at twenty degrees below zero, and early
this morning at 16. Itis now, (neon.) mild
and pleasant.
PHILADELPHIA, Dec. 19—10 P. M.
It is snowing here this evening,
Tue Tvrkish War.—From the New York
Tribune of the 20th, we compile tke following:
“T,etters of the 26th from the seat of war
state that since the 15th it had rained along
almost the whole extent of the Lower Danube, so that military operations on any extended scale are at present impossible.”
Some movements however. were reported,
The Turks exhibited their superiority at Giugevo, and have gained further successes in
Asia. They have not only defended the fort
St. Nicholas, but have captured the fortresses of Usugutti and Loukum Kaleh. “The
Georgians favor the Turks. .
Hostilities have commenced at Sea, and
captures have been made on both sides.
The London Daily JVews has an editorial,
stating its belief that the Turkish Fleet under Admiral Slade, has entered the Black
Sea, with the bold intention of attacking Sebastopol, and further adds that it would be a
crowning to the cause of the Turks, if the
next mail should bring intelligence that the
Turkish fleet had bombarded the vet strong
hold of the Russians. The Circassians have
been successful over the Russians at Shorog
and Sheftketil. On the 24th ult. Shamye and
Ismael Pasha were to make a simultaneous
attack on the Russian lines. Altogether, the
Turks assisted by the allied powers of France
and England, have fair prospects of a successful campaign.
TypoGraPHicaL Errors.—Our readers probably noticed a number of errors in our paper last week. Owing to a press of Job-work
we were rather late in getting our paper
made up, and were consequently so hurried,
that proper attention was not given to the reVision of our proof-sheet, as we were not in
the office at the time ; we did not notice the
imperfection until over half the amount of
our subscription list had been worked off.
Another error which we wish to call your
attention to, was in our report of the weather. We stated that the thermometer on one
or two different occasions, has stood as low
as 20 degrees below Farenheit; we had intended to say it had stood within 20 degrees
of zero—according to Farenheit, but owing
to the hurry as above stated, the error was
overlooked, while reading proof. We presume, however, we were understood.

between the hours of 9 and 10 o’clock A. M.
Dr. C. cultivates an aptitude for SURGERY, so necessary in a mining region, often afflicted with accidents, far distant from the skill of those who in large
cities devote themselves exclusively to this branch of
Medical Science, and is furnished at all times with the
various and most improved RMENTARIA, ready to
perform operations and rectify accidents at a moment’s warning,.
Dr. C, will demonstrate to those who may call on
him, that it is unnecessary for them, at great outlay
and inconvenience, to repair to the lower cities in
quest of surgical aid, whieh they can as well procure
at home.
Consultation in diseases of the Throat and
CHEST, particularly solicited ; and in the treatment
of these affections, DR. CLEVELAND avails himself
of those late masterly and triumphant improvements
in this department of medicine, as practiced by Drs.
