THE TEL
J. W. OLIVER, Eprror.
WnHoLesaLe Business.—Almost every body
in Boston Knows that Father Streeter marries more folks in the course of a current
year than two or ten divines in the United
States. It beats all how many men and women the old fellow “ties up,’’ and causes to
trot in double-harness through life. Not long
since, a rural district youth and his Psyche
came to Father Streeter, to be fixed out according to thelaw and gospel. Well, the old
gentleman put ’em through in the regular
manner, and—charged.
“How much have I to pay for this job? sayz
the newly-manufactured husband, drawing
eut his pocket-book.
“Oh, well,” said the old gentleman, “I always leave that to the bridegroom: as he
feels, he pays.”
“Well, I don’t want to be mean, Mr. Streeter, about this affair, you know. I don’t care
a cent, by Ned! what you charge—only tell
us how much would be right.”
“I’m not particular, sir; suppose we say
five dollars.”
“Five dollars! Sam Hill, but you do
stick it-ont Why; I-know ofa feller you
married last fall fortwo dears!’
“Very likely I did, sir,” said the old gentleman, “but he’s a regnlar customer.—I’ve
married him five times, and can afford to do
it lower ?”
Quire a Romance.—The Alta California
has the following :
“A young woman was married, on Friday
week, and, after the knot had been tied, some
of her friends, who were not pleased with the
match, procured a writ of habeas corpus, stating that she was illegally detained, and went
with an officer to take the bride from the arms
and possession of the husband. He, however, promised that he would not remain in that
house where she was during the night, and
that in the morning she might be brought
into Court on the writ, and the matter legally arranged. The arrangement appearing
satisfactory, the pursuing party left, and the
husband, having a strict regard for his word,
and as strict a one for his martial rights, removed his bride to other quarters, having, as
he promised to do, left the house, but taking
her with him ; upon which point she had made
no promise. Next morning the bride was
brought before a magistrate on the writ, and,
upon a proof of the facts, was permitted to
depart in peace, leaning on her husband’s
arm.
A Sircatiox.—Two young officers were
traveling in the far west, when they
stopped to take supper at a small road-side
tavern, kept by avery rough Yankee woman.
The landlady, in a calico sun-bonnet and bare
feet, stood at the head of the table to pour
out. She inquired of her guests “if they
chose long-sweetening in their coffee.’ The
first officer supposing that “long sweetening
meant a large portion of that article, chose
it accordingly. What was his dismay when
he saw their hostess dip her finger deep
down in an earthen jar of honey that stood
near her, and then stir it (the finger,) around
in the coffee. His companion, sceing this,
preferred “short-sweetening.” Upon which
the woman picked up a large lump of maple
sugar that lay in a brown paper on the floor
beside her, and biting off a piece, put it into
hiscup. Both the gentlemen dispensed with
coffee that evening. ~
PREACHING FOR THE SIMPLE & THE LEARNED.—I remember St. Gregory, in handling
one text, professes that he will endeavor to
handle it so that the weakest understanding
might comprehend the highest points, and the
highest understanding not be weary to hear
ordinary doctrines so delivered. Indeed, it
is a good art to deliver deep points in a holy
plainness, and plain points in a holy delightfulness: for many times one part of our auditory understands us not when we have done,
and so they are weary ; and another part understands us before we begin, and so we are
weary.—Donne.
Covnsen VS, EXAMPLE.—We need to follow
Solomon’s counsel rather than his example,
and look upon the prevalence of knowledge,
fadustry, frugality; and justice as of more
value thanenormous fortunes in the few, or
passion for show and luxury in the many.
We should bless our fathers for their noble
course in guarding against dangerous opulence by equalizing the inheritance of children, and throwing open to all the institutions of education, which provide for general
prosperity better than any agrarian law.—
_ Rev. 8S. Osgood.
TrvE Freevou.—He is a freeman whose
social condition is in no respect inferior to
the claims of his moral nature and his intellect. He is no slave, no matter what his condition, when that condition continues to improve in intellectual and moral respects. He
alone is the slave who is denied the position
which is essential to the exercise of his proper faculties, and the fit development of his
natural powers, He cannot but be a tyrant,
whom society has lifted into a condition superior to his capacities—Egeria,
j= Formerly, thy soul was great, ardent,
vast ; the entire circle of the universe found
place in thy heart. O, Charles, that thou
hast become small, that thou hast become
miserable, since thou lovest no one but thyself—Schiller. °
