The treasure hunting party has left Petaluma under the following circumstance, as stated in the Journal : — “A party of.some fifteen or Sighteen persons left this locality afew days since for the eastern slope of the Sierra Nevadas, where they go in search of what they believe to be an immence deposit of silver ore. The cause of this expedition is understood to be as fcllows: During the year 1849, while on his way to California, the leader of this expedition, A. J. Harding, while his train was camping on the eastern slope of the Sierra Nevadas, went out on a hunting excursion. During his travels he came upon a mass of volcanic rocks, from fissures and abont the base of which he discovered immense quantities of what appeared to be silver ore of exceeding richness. Taking specimets into camp, with some difficulty be sueceeded in melting the mass, and extracing what appeared to be pure silver, This result he brought with him to Caliaornia, intending to have itproperly tested when occasion offered.
