Mineral Seekers in Petaluma.
The treasure hunting party has left Petaluma under the following circumstance, as
stated in the Journal : —
“A party of.some fifteen or Sighteen persons left this locality afew days since for the
eastern slope of the Sierra Nevadas, where
they go in search of what they believe to be
an immence deposit of silver ore. The cause
of this expedition is understood to be as fcllows: During the year 1849, while on his
way to California, the leader of this expedition, A. J. Harding, while his train was
camping on the eastern slope of the Sierra
Nevadas, went out on a hunting excursion.
During his travels he came upon a mass of
volcanic rocks, from fissures and abont the
base of which he discovered immense quantities of what appeared to be silver ore of exceeding richness. Taking specimets into
camp, with some difficulty be sueceeded in
melting the mass, and extracing what appeared to be pure silver, This result he
brought with him to Caliaornia, intending to
have itproperly tested when occasion offered.
