THE TELEGRAPH,
A rolicksome, frolicksome, rare old cock
As ever did nothing, was our dog Jock ;
A gleasome, fleesome, affectionate beast,
As slow at a fight, as swift at a feast ;
A wit among dogs, when his life ’gan to fail,
One conldn’t but see the old wag in his tail,
When his years grew long, and his eyes grew dim,
And his course of bark could not strengthen him.
Never more now shall our knees be pressed
By his Gear old chops in their slobbery rest ;
Nor our mirth be stirred at his solemn looks,
As wise and as dull as divinity books.
Our old friend’s dead ; but we all well know
He’s gone to the kennels where the good dogs go,
Where the cooks be not, but the beef bones be,
And his old head never need turn for a flea,
OPENING OF THE St. Cuarites Horer, on
THE CORNER OF WASHINGTON AND Davis S1v’s.
This commodious establishment was opened
to the public on the evening of the 19th inst.,
by its enterprising proprietors, Messrs. Harper and Merritt, on which occasion some two
hundred of their guests sat down to a sumptuaus repast, given in honor of the occasion.
The evening’s entertainment passed off with .
much spirit and harmony. Among other
toasts that were drank, was the following:—
The Miners.—The product of whose brawny arms and manly sinews has been the mainstay and bulwark of our State’s progress.
May they during their sojourn in this city,
always find such a comfortable home, and
agreeable and obliging hosts, as those we now
see before us. “The Proprietors of the St.
Charles Hotel.”
“I remember,” says Lord Biden, “Mr.
Justice Gould trying a case at York, and
when he kad proceeded for about two hours,
he observed:
“Here are only eleven jurymen in the box;
where is the twelfth 2”
“Please you, "my lord,” said one of the
eleven’ he has gone away about some other
business but he has LEFT HIS VERDICT WITH
ME?’
f= It is said that Cutting, who lately had
8 difficulty with Breckenbridge, is completely
posted up in all the afterparts of a quarrel.
Upon several occasions he has proved himself
on hand, whether his opponents prefer pistols,
rifles, small-swords, closed digits, brick-bats
ot twenty paces, or raw-hides at two. Indeed
he is quite as accomplished, as a member of
the California Legislature.
Petririrp Bopy.—-An Eastern exchange
says, that a human body has been exhumed in
grading the streets of Cincinnati, 5 feet 7
niches in height, and completely petrified.
“Eminent scientific gentlemen” have examined and concluded they cannot tell anything
about it.
RatHer Harp cron tox Natives.—The
Hon. T. S. Bocock, of Virginia, in a recent
speech in Congress. thus apostropbises the .
great American people :—
“There are, alas! too many who interpolate upon the bible, and, when the commandment says, ‘thou shalt not steal,’ add, in their
reading, ‘except from the United States Goyernment.’ ”’
Puatn AS Mup.—The Clipper, a new Journal just published at Columbia, Tuolumne
county, in answer to inquiries concerning its
politics, says :
“We will satisfy them by stating that we
are, so far as politics are concerned, as independent as a hog on ice.”
Time is a great antidote for grief. In less
than a month after Muggles bad said his
heart was so ‘broken’ for the loss of his wife
that he could never look up again, he was
reading Don Juan to a ballet dancer with a
balloon skirt.
A country paper says the best sewing machine in the world, is one about seventeen
years old, that wears gaiter boots and a pocket to put her wages in.
A Raitroap Tury.—Tim.—Bob, by sitting
on that side you are missing all the sights on
this side.
Bob.—Never mind, Tom, I am sighting all
the misses on this side.
New Wuic Paprr.—it is stated in the
Stockton Journal that the Whig party will
probably have an “organ” in that place with!
in a few weeks. Rumor has it that said pa.
per is to be under the control of Hon. H. A.
Crabb.
AN Important SuGcEestiox.—The Express
urges that the citizens of Marysville, in view
of the late fiery ordeal through which that
place has just passed, the necessity of constructing thoroughly fire-proof buiidings.

A FIRE company is being organised at Dia.

Artesian WELLS.—A friend recently from
San Jose informs us that on the farm of Mr.
Shepher¢, in that place, two artesian wells
have been sunken to the depth of eighty feet,
both of which yield an abundance of the purest water ; indeed, so copious is the supply
that the entire farm is irrigated. Above the
surface is an upright pipe, twenty feet in
height, out of which shoots a beautiful jet a’
eau, ,
Will somehody tell us why these wells are
not more common. A fortune lies in the
ground for any man who will give to the people of California a good and complete Artesian Well,

HOSPITALS. .
The following important communication has been
forwarded to Professor Holloway for publication, by
. Mr. B. Dixon, Chemist, King street, Norwich.
Copy of a letter from Capt. Smith of Great
Yarmouth, dated Jan. 19th, 1853.
To Mr. Dixon—Dear Sir,—I send you the particulars of a cure effected by Prof. Holloway's invaluable
medicines. Mr. John Walton, late in her Majesty’s
service, in the British ficet at Malta, had a very bad
ulcerated ancle, and after having been in the Malta
Hospita] for six months, was sent to England as an
inyalid to Portsmonth Hospital, where he remained
an inmate four months, there, as at Malta, refusing
to have the limb amputated, he was turned out incurable. He then came to Yarmouth, and was under a
medical gentleman for about three months, but his
ancle became so much worse that all hope was lost.
. At this period, by my advice, he tried Holloway’s Ointment and Pills, which by unremitted application,
healed all the ulcers, and restored him te perfect
health and strength. — c
