en nt Iuportant {-The Adventists tell us that the whole of this wicked’ world is to be smashed and-burnt up onthe 19th of May next. The Springfield Post suggests that those whonot wish to Jeave the world with a printer’s bill on their conscience should fork over before that. time. , #& Mrs. Partington informs the Boston Post that flour rises so fast, there isn’t the least need of “emptins’ in making bread. Ja Nebraska embraces all the unorganized territory of the Union—the extent of its boundary is over three thousand miles—its area about five hundred thousand square miles—capable of being formed into a dozen states each as large as Ohio. gs The St. Louis Intelligencer, says the exact number of hogsslanghtered in that city this season. is 82,204, which is an advance of . 25,200 over the former year. ==> Miss Susan Nipper says that the Russians have an awful responsibility resting on them for killing Turks, for every Turk who is killed leaves a dozen widows. The Baltimore American says that the product of the oyster trade of that city is equal to the product of all the wheat and corn raised in the state of Maryland. There is annually sold in the Baltimore market 4,800,000 bushels of oysters. The shells are carried to Virginia and North Carolina for manure, and bring, it is said, $120,000 annually. The widow of Alexander Hamilton, though 98 years old, still retains her faculties in an astonishing degree, and converses with ease and brilliancy. She always insists upon visitors taking a merry glass from General Washington’s punch bowl, which is choicely cherished. gs A singular petition.is now before Congress. In 1846, Mrs. Elisabeth C. Smith. of Missouri, under the assumed name of Ben Newman, enlisted as a soldier in the Mexican war. She discharged her duties faithfully as a soldier for ten months, when her sex was discovered and she was discharged from service. She has since married, and now applies for her pay and bounty land, which she certainly ought to have—Vorwich Courier. GeoLocicaL Survey or Ittrwor.—A result, not anticipated, probably, even by these engaged in the work, has*grown out of the State Geological survey, now in progress. We refer to the discovery, among other building materials. of several beds of beautiful marble ; superior to any rocks of the kind we have before seen, from any part of the valley of the Mississippi, and equaling many: of the imported marbles in beauty of colors afd susceptibility of high polish—_[.4/tcn Courier. Prick or Fiour.—There seems to be a general opinion that about half of the present high price of Flour, is the work of speculators ; buéthat even they cannot keep it up many months longer. The N. York Tribune says: Let us take courage. We shall not starve yet. Wait till the canal opens, andit will take more yeast than the flour speculators can raise to keep flour effervescing as it has lately There isa lot of land in the center of Mel bourne, Australia, just large enough for a store, which has been sold and re-sold to so many hands thatall the lawyers in Melbourne and their name is legion, have their hands fall making out the titles. As, however, this takes time, no one is legally in possession ; and down squats. a Yankee upon the spot, runs up a bark and shingle store, and drives a roaring trade, rent free, his neighbor paying at least fifty a week for the same accommodation. SHoorine Arrray AT SAN Francisco.—The Bay papers, state that,on Thursday last a young man, named Thomas Burke, was shot, in the Union Hotel, in San Francisco, by Jas Smith. Carr. Jupan, witha company of seventy dragoons, is on his way to Fort Lane, Rogue River Valley, where they are to be stationed. —[S. F. Sun. TraDE.—Business has been quite brisk, t the past two or three days. As soon as th going becomes good we shall realize a lively time of it.—[San Joaquin Republican. ConscL at GuaymMas.—From private advices received in this city we learn that Major Richard Roman, late State Treasurer, has been appointed United States Consul at the port of Guaymas.—[Com. Advertiser. Kentucky.—A bill has been introduced into the Legislature of Kentucky, to prohibit the sale of slave children under the age of five years, separate from their mothers, Crry Scrir.—We are gratified to be able to state that our city scrip is worth its face, and that there is not now outstanding,” with the exception of those celebrated eight per cent bonds, evidence of the city’s indebtedness to the amount of five hundred dollars —[Evening Journal. A Fresu Importation.—In the Moselle, which arrived on Friday from Hongkong, about two hundred and fifty more long-tailed Celestials were brought to this city. Within the past year our Chinese population has increased very rapidly, so that now a person in passing through large sections of our city might almost imagine himself in some of the low streets of Canton or Hongkong. Dirt, filth, nauseous smells and horrid caterwauling charaeterize the streets in which they live, and the most disgusting indecencies practised by them are forced upon the eye in passing their houses, A more utterly useless race of people: could not. be introduced amongst us. —[Alta California. AND CUSTOM HOUSE, SANSOME STREET. HE ABOVE EXCELSIOR ESTABLISHMENT, which is Fire Proof and five stories high, (being the only five story building on the Pacific,) is now finished®nd splendidly furnished throughout. Although it contains one hundred and seventeen large rooms, with facilities to accommodate two hundred lodgers—such has been the rush of customers to the Exchange since its completion, that the proprietors have been induced to lease half of the fire-proof bloek just erected by Lieut. Maynard, and adjoining the Exchange. This will add seventeen large apartments, and afford those facilities which the increase of trade requires. Our present Bar will, in a few days, be removed to the first floor in the Maynard Block, one door north of where the Bar is at present. No pains or money will be spared to render the Exchange the Excelsior Hotel of the public, and keep pace with the rapid growth and improvement of our wonderful city, and State. : With the above inducements, the Exchange is confidently offered to the ‘‘ million’’ as deserving their patronage—and although not disposed to be Wiy-dy and trumpet our. own praise abroad, our hearty thanks are cheerfully tendered to the ten thousands who have bestowed upon us alike their favors dnd money. Not unmindful of the former, we shall duly appreciate the latter, and reciprocate in future, as in times past, the smiles of our old customers and greet with pleasure our new ones—who probably will compose the largest portion of the world.
