Who is it whispers tender things
And talks of love and wedding rings,
And tells what,_pleasure-marriage brings?
A Lover!
“Who'll sigh, and yawn, and silence keep,
*Or at the window take a:peep, _
“Then on the sofa, down to sleep? __
A Husband!
‘Who says, when married, he intends
‘To give up smoke and giddy friends,
¥or that it too much money spends?
-A-Lover!
Who stops out often late to dine, :
And comes ee ae for wine,
But scolds if you sh e repine?
& : <A Husband !
"Who'll spend upon you all he may,
‘Make presents almost every day, _
And deem one smile full ample pay? .
A Lover!
‘Who says how fast the money goes,
And hopes that you do not suppose,
Wie can afford so much for clothes ?
A HusbanG!
"Who says how long appears a day,
If ever he is forced to stay
But even that short time away-?
A Lover!
Who spends fhe auitumn with a friend,
And will but one short letter send,
With all his worn-out clothes to mend?

Se EAE PAE a see wae
Meat anp Derk Usep sy One Man.—Some
genius has perpetrated the following calcudation:
I have been married 32 years, during
which time I have received from the bands:
of my wife three cups of coffee each day, two
in the morning and one at night, making
about 35,040 cups of half pint each, nearly
70 barrels-of 30 gallons each, weighing 17,529. lbs., or mearly 9 tons. Yet in that
period I have rarely varied in weight from
160 Ibs. It will be seen, therefore, that I.
have drank, in coffee alone, 218 times my
own weight. Iam not much of an eater,
yet I presume I have consumed about 18
ounces a day, which makes 5,806 pounds, or
10 oxen. Of flour I have consumed in 32
gears about 50 barrels. For twenty years
of this time I drank two wine glasses of
brandy each day, making 900 quarts. The
Port wine, Madeira, whisky punch, etc., I am
not able to count, but they are not large.
When we take into consideration all the
vegetables in addition, such as potatoes,
peas, asparagus, strawberries, cherries, pears,
peaches, raisins, etc., the amount consumed .
by an individual is enormous. Now, my:
body has been rengwed more than four times .
in 32 years; and taking it for granted that
the water, of which I have drank more, acts
merely as a dilutant, yet taken together, I
conclude I have consumed in 32 years about
the weight of 1108 men of 160 pounds each.
> And
Tur Exony Ipou.—The following extracts.
are from a work by a Massachusetts writer,
entitled ‘The Ebony Idol.’
In this story a worthy clergyman, of
moderate endowments, gives a temporary
asylum to Czsar, and labors to explain what
he expected of him in return:
“I wish to do for you all that I can do
wisely and as a christian, but I cannot distress my family to serve you or squander the
small means at my command. I would like
you to work in the garden, cut my wood,
and do such errands and chores as will assist my wife. It seems to me you cannot
but be willing to do this.”
Cesar sat-dog eyed and sullen, without
even pretending to listen. Mr. Cary spoke
more warmly : “I shall make inquiry for you
that yon may obtain employment-in some
reliable family, where you can be paid for
your labor ; as soon as such opening is found
i shall expect you will leave as willingly.”
“Dis nigger didn’t come norf to work, no
how : get work enuf at de souf,” cried Cesar
indignantly’
“But you must work or starve ; liberty is
nothing unless you can be clothed and
fed.”
“Dis chile got clothed and fed at de sonf,
and war’nt! twitted of it nuder;” growled
Cesar. “Lor’, wish you could eat one of
Dinah’s hoecakes ; dem’s fixins as is fixins!”
“] beg you, Cesar, now that Providence
has released you from slavery—”
“Providence hadn't nuthin’ to do about
it; it was jus’ dem cussed abolitioners ; and
dat is fact, Massa Cary.”
Mr. Cary groaned. It was evident that he
had indeed fallen upon fallow ground. “Cesar, all gifts are from God! He has doubtless some motive in releasing you froma
cruel task master.”
‘\Nebber heard any nigger, black or white,
call my old massa cruel task-master afore.
He was a gemman as is a gemman.”
“Why did you leave him, then?” asked
Mr. Cary a little testily.
“Oh, Lor’ knows; coz I was seduced
I'spect. Sambo he heard as how pussens
up norf didn’t work only when dey had
mind ; now Gdis chile never had a mind and
so I was seduced.”
ee
Tar Cotp: SHoutper.—Mr. Buchanan was
not to be received with honor on his return
to his home in Wheatland. Onthecontrary,
the people among whom his lot is to be cast
on his retirement from office respectfully
decline to make any demonstrations in his
honor. An invitatien to participate in a
public reception of the ex-President having
been extended by a committee of citizens of
Lancaster, Pennsylvania, to the Select and
Common Councils and the Fire Department
of the day, the President of the Common
Council, remarked:
Even Mr. Buchanan's friends must admit
that a majority of our people think the
course of his administration, until very recently, has been neither creditable to himself,
honorable to the Democratic party, nor beneficial to the State or Nation. It is just such
manifestions as this motion proposes, that
shock the sense of justice in hunest men, and
cause them to doubt the sincerity of the dectrine of “measures and not men.” Bestow
honors where praise is justly merited, but
suffer tbe undeserving to pass through the
world in silence.
Considering that the members of the Common Council are all Democrats, this is an unkind. cat. Moreover the Lancaster Fencibles,
@ military company, rejected a motion to
aecept the invitation by a vote of 15 to 12.
In the San Fire Company the invitation was
lost by a tie vote, but at a subsequent meeting it was_carried by a bare majority. The
Hook and Ladder Compauy rejected it unanimously. The Union Fire Company received
and accepted the invitation as a mark of respect to an old member of the Company.—
The gentleman so often spoken of in
novels, who riveted people with his gaze has
now obtained employment at a boiler manufactory.
