He spoke in the first person, did he not?” “No. Iwas the first person who spoke, my lord.” “T mean this: don’t bring in the third person, but repeat his exact words.” “There was no third person present, my lord—only him and L.” “Look here, my good fellow, he did not say HE had been keeping the pig. He said / had been keeping it.” “T assure you, my lord, there was no mention of your lordship’s name at all. We are on two different stories, my lord. There was no third person; and if any thing had been said against your lordship, Imust have heard it.” The Court had to give it up. Narrow Escapr.—The St. Paul (Minnesota) Pioneer tells the following : A middle-aged gentleman was whirling a buxom lass through the figures of the dance at a Teutonic ball, when a friend whispered to him that his wife was at the door inquiring forhim. He immediately handed his partner to a seat, escaped through a back passage, and ran home as fast as his legs could carry him. When his wife returned, she found her truant lord seated at a table, in dressing gown and slippers, demurely reading a prayer book! His wife looked at him earnestly for a moment, and then felt satisfied that she had done him a wrong in supposing him capable of deceiving her. I said that I Qe An Itiustration.—The threat of secession made by two or three Southern States, in case their demands are not granted, reminds an exchange of a threat made by an Irishman who lost his hat in a well, and was let down in the bucket to recover it. The well being deep, he lost his courage before reaching the bottom, and called lustily to those at the windlas to draw him up. They paid no attention to his cries, which so exasperated him, that he bellowed out in despair— “By. de howly moother of Moses! if ye don’t be afther pulling me up, I'll cut the rope!’ * Guns were invented by Swartz, a German, about the year 1378, and were brought into use by the Venicians in 1382. Cannons were invented at an anterior date. They were first used at the battle of Cressy in 1345. In England they were first used at the siege of Berwick, in 1405. It was not until 1544, however, that they were cast in England. They were first used on board of ships by the Venicians ia 1535, and were in use among the Turks about the same time. 7—_—_—_—_— + Oo Harp Burrer Witrnovur Ice.—To have defightfally hard butter in summer, without ice, the plan recommended is a good one.— Puta trivet, or any open flat thing with legs, in a saucer. Put on this trivet the plate of butter, and fill the saucer with water. Turn acommon flower-pot upside down over the butter, so that its edge shail be within the saucer, and under the water. Plug the hole of the flower-pot with a cork, then drench it with water. Set in a coot place till morning—or, if this operation be performed in the morning, the butter will be very hard by supper time. ‘ ——-+o B@FMrs. Partington called on the Japanese at Washington, and told them she was mighty glad to see them, as she understood that their President was Ty-Coon, who, she doubted not, was of near kin to Old Zip €oon, run. by the Whigs in 1840. If they wanted him to, Ike would sing’em a song about Old Zip._—_ oO Bay Mrs. Sickles, it is said, is againa mother ; which causes some malicious editor spitefully to remark, that a Key might be furnished to the mystery.
