THE TERRIBLE ee er st ‘eae just . as our paper was goihg to press, we heard ofa terrible accident which occurred in the tunnel of . the Yuba Mining Company, on Manzanita Hill, in this neighborhood, from the premature explosion of a blast, but were not prepared to give . We have since seen one . hames or particulars. of the unfortunate men injured, who furnished us with the details omitted. About 10 o’clock on Friday morning, formant, Henry Harper, and his co-laborer, Richard Dodge, were about to complete the tamping for a blast,when the explosion occurred. They are entirely ignorant of what could have produced it, as they were using a plentiful quan. . tity of water, and worked with even unusual care. blown off; also the thumb and two first fingers of the left hand, above the second jeints. He also _receiyed a severe wound inthe left thigh, and was otherwise maimed and bruised in such a general manner as to lay him up for some time. Dodge had his only eye destroyed, by a fine piece . of gravel, which pierced through the ball. He lost the sight of the other eye about a year ago, while chopping wood, a stick flying up and producing that unfortunate injury. This, we understand, is tle fifth time that he has been blown up . by premaiure explosions; but on none of the . previous occasions did he sustain any serious . personal damage. Heis now receiving medical attention at the Half-Way House, between San . Juan and Sebastopol. Mr. Harper lies at the . Sierra Nevada Hotel, and is kindly c seine for. 2+ terrible disease, the Diptheria, more commonly . known as the putrid sore throat, is just now prevailing to an alarming extent in several “tain localities.
