ITALY.
BY WM. CULLEN BRYANT.
Voices from the mountain speak,
Appenines to Alps reply;
Vale to-vale, and peak to peak,
Toss an old remembered cry ;
et
Shall be free !
Such the mighty shout that fills
All the passes of her hills.
All the old Italian lakes
Quiver at that sae word ;
Como with a thrill awakes;
Garda to her depths is stirred ;
Amid the steeps
Where he sleeps,
Dreaming of the elder years,
Startled Thrasymenus hears.
Sweeping Arno, swelling Po,
Murmur freedom to their meads;
Tiber swift, and Liris slow,
Send strange whispers from their reeds,
Ital
Shall be free,
Sing the glittering brooks that slide
Toward the sea from Etna’s side.
Long ago was Gracchus slain ;
Brutus perished long ago ;
Yet her poets still remain,
Whence the shoots of greatness grow ;
Yet again,
God-like men,
Sprung from that heroic stem,
Call the land to rise with them.
They who haunt the swarming street,
They who chase the mountain bore,
Or where cliff and bollow meet,
Prune the vine or pull the ore—
With a stroke
Break their yoke ;
Slaves but yesterday were they ;
Freemen with the dawning day.
Looking in his children’s eyes,
While his own with gladness flash,
‘“Ne’er shall these,” the father cries,
“Cringe, like hounds, beneath the lash.
These shall ne’er
Brook to wear
Chains that, thick with sordid rust,
Weigh the spirit to the dust.”
Monarchs—ye whose armies stand
Harnessed for the battle field,
Pause—and from the lifted hand
Drop the bolts of war ye yield.
Stand aloof
While the proof
Of the people’s might is given ;
Leave their kings to them and heaven.
Stand aloof—mark the oppressed
Chase the oppressor, pale with fear,
As the fresh winds of the west
Blow the misty valleys clear.
Stand and see
Italy
Cast the gyves she wears no more
To the gulf that steeps her shore.
A Live Appger Sent in a LETTER TO A
FaitHLess Wire.—The Chicago Press and
Tribune of a recent date, gives the following
startling account of a rather singular affair:
The inmates of the post-office were thrown
into a state of general consternation yesterday afternoon, by a series of the most vociferous and agonizing screams, which were
found to proceed from one of the hall-ways
of the building. Upon investigation, the
source of the outcry was found to bea colored woman, who was wringing her hands,
and apparently in a state bordering on insanity. The bystanders questioned her as to
her troubles, to which she made no response,
but pointed to alively little green ADDER
which was rapidly wriggling over the floor
towards the open air.
A general etampede ensued, but after a
protracted effort the reptile was properly
secured and carried to the office of the City
Marshal.
It appears that the woman, a Mrs. Pierce,
has a husband down in Georgia. Their
marital life has pot been one of the most
pleasant or poetic, and several letters of
objurgation have passed between them. Yesterday Mrs. Pierce went to the post-office
and took outa little paste-board box containing aletter. As she was removing the
letter from the box, after having broken the
seals, she was surprised to heara hissing
noise proceed from the box, and in an instant
after, to see the green head, glittering eves
and barbed tongue of a horrible adder shoot
up before her. She dropped the box as if
it had been a coal of fire, and broke out into
hysteric screams. The following is a copy
of the letter she received, which fully discloses the motives of the husband, and the
part he designed the reptile to play in a little
drama of his own murderous conceiving:
Marion, Oct. 17th, 1860.
“Dear Wife:—I must tell you that I do
love you with all my heart, and none but
you. How do you think I can live without
you, dear loving wife. How does my very
heart ache for you. Now, dear wife, do believe me what [ tell you, for God’s sake, for
I never loved any other but you. Here is
one of your dear loving pets, and take it
and kiss it for me, now dear, affectionate
wife. Why don’t you come, if you can, and
take your dear little Simon in your arms,
and press him to your bosom, as you had so
much love for me. Margaret, I must say
that this will be the last that I ever write to
you; and another thing—if you would live
with me, I would never live with you, for I
am afraid of you. After me writing to you
and telling you that I would live with you,
if you would promise me that you weuld do
right by me. Well, by G—d, if I can’t get
along without you, I will kill myself; for I
will never bother youany more. I amgoing
to get a bill from you now, sure; but I did
want to live with you; but I don’t now, and
never will so long as I live; but I must say
that I love you; but that don’t amount to
anything now, andi don’t wantit toamount
to anything; but you shall» have Simon’s
picture, sure. If you don’t get it this winter, you will never see him, forlam going
to take him with me, and I would like to
Teave society. Iam going so far that you
will never see him. Simon is sick now.
“Yours truly, for a goner,
“PHILANDER PIERCE.
‘Kiss this dear little pet for me, and take it
and sleep with it for God's sake.
“p, S$. They say that ‘blue is true,’ and let
this bite you, and you will find out this is a
good little bedfellow.”
That the diabolical Philander supposed’
His wife was going to play Cleopatra with
the charming present he sent her, is not for
@ moment to be entertained; but, rather,
that he concocted this unique plan of making
way with her, is probable. At any rate his
designs have failed miserably, and his snakeship, peacefully coiled up in a bottle of alcohol, will hereafter decorate the walls of the
Audubon Club.

THE GUTTA PERCHA
MANUFACTURING COMPANY,
OF NEW YORK.
IK introducing the Goods of this Company to the notice of the people of the Pacific coast,
we desire to call attention to the fact that
GUTTA PERCHA
isan entirely different material from
INDIA RUBBER,
which, however, it resembles in many respects. It
grows ina differené soil, is the product of a different
tree, and when vulcanised, possesses virtues that make
it far more valuable than Rubber. Jt is not affected by
heat or cold, oils or acids, steam or water, for which reasens, it is evident that for Belting, Hose, or Steam
Packing, it is superior to any other material ever offered.
The Machine Belting
made by this Company is found to serve a better pur
pose than either Leather or Rubber, being less expen
sive than either, while itcombines the valuable properties of both. It is perfectly flexible, but stretches
far less than either of the above named articles. a single tightening being generally sufficient to insure its
running well. All who have tried it pronounce it the
finest belting in use.
THE MINING HOSE
Is Believed to be superior to any other article ever offered. While it is as flexible as Rubber, its cost is far
less, anfi from the nature of the article it will stand
more wear and tear thanany other hose. The surface
is hard and impenetrable, which insures it against
being cut by the sharp quartz rock. Water cannot affect it, so that it is secure against mildew and decomposition. It will stand a great fall of water, and is
bound to give satisfaction. For purposes of
STEAM PACKING,
Gutta Percha isfound invaluable. Being entirely imperviousto oil and steam and capable of enduring heat
to any extent without decomposition, it has been found
by actual test, among Engineers at the East, to be
vastly superior. to anyother material ever used.
Th pany also makes Clothing of all kinds,

KereErers’ Line.—Jo Keepers, who drives the
“Red Bird,” an eight-mule bell team, makes his
trips regularly in eight days between North San
Juan and Sacramento; and those mules are
