Press—Dear Sirs:—Have you an ea‘sy chair, into which I may express myselt . while I talk a Mttte to your numerous read‘ers—“young folks in ‘particular?’ %t bas . , become remarkable in California, sat out of ‘so many young marriageabie folks, there are so few that ever get martied. { think ‘you will agree With ‘re, that it is mot altegetiver ‘inappropriate te intyaite into the cause, so ‘detrimrental to the sociability and welfare of ‘the country—for in my humble opinion, there is nothing that can give such character and permanence to society, as the desirable and legitimate institution of matrinrony. It ‘has a moralizing influence; it would make many beautiful homes in sow desert places; jt Would add to the growth and prosperity of the country. That no more get married, ‘is owing to the peculiar state of society.— When I speak of society, I do not mean to ‘include that portion of every California . ‘community, known as the abandoned and ‘dissipated, who so effectually foster and . support the numerous infamous institutions ‘so common in this country, which stand as ‘monuments of disgrace to theit supporters, and stamp the charactet ef society as the . Very worst. But separate ward apart from thers, with their bad inflwences, California society isnot calculated for matrimonial match-making. ‘What are called “fast” young men and wemen take the lead in sectety. The prominent feature im the character of the former, as he appears to tive casual observer, is mustache amd impedente; ard of tke fatter, frills, coquetry, and nonsense. When such meet in company, @iere is an overflow of Very small talk, neither instructing nor entertaining; and they generally separate, dissatisfied With the compart, ard themselves; and it is reasonable te stppete that itis the same thing when they meet fete a fete. Now, Yhere are few ladies who, when they think seriously of marrying. would be likely to give their heart and hand to a mtn whe pays more attention to the ceitivation of a mustache, and to the art of appearing “fast,” than he does to his bweiness of making a living. :And where is the man, let him be ‘ever so fast hitaself, who, when he thinks seriously of choosing a partuer for life, would be satistied With all the frill and foolishness young ladies have to adopt, to be considered a la mode in California. One would think that it is owing to want of education; but it is not always the case, for we see around us many cultivated minds, yet they seem to agree with the mass, that subjects of any real importance or merit, the discussion of which might . result advantageousir, should be discarded as slow, tame, and commonplace. And thus it is, the fashion and folly of California, hide the real virtue and sentiment of a great _portion of her people. Gentlemen will please read no farther, as i have a few words to say to the ladies priVately. Girls, do you wantto marry? Tf youdo— and I know you do, for we all agree on that subject—we ate in ne particular hurry, you know, but we all intend to marry, and there is no use denying it Well, to succeed, we must change our tactics, get up a reformationt-sqciety—if not general, we must in our individual cases; we must become more rational and natural; we have tried “frills and airs” long enough; they will not succeed. And the smal! talk and nonsense that men think we so much appreciate, will give place to something sensible, entertaining, natural, and I flatter myself that they will not always overlook the matrimonial question. I have been trying this plan, and find it works to a charm; and I think that I shall before long have the sublime satisfaction of demonstrating the practicability of it. Sarag Jane. While the work, however, was in progress, an incident occurred which damped tht ardor of the youth for tire accomplishment of what ‘he ‘had undertaken, and seemed to overthrow all expectations of its ever being completed. Among the numerous attendants upon the workmen in the preparation of their food, ard the cate of the camp in which they dwelt, there appeared a girl of great beauty, who, while attending upon her father, Was observed by the young engineer who became so violently enamored that hi attention was distracted and turned from the object upoh which his mind had hitherto been bent. He saw that the a¢complishmert ofthe work he had undertaken would result in the marriage with the daughter of the . inca, and this, though accompanied by all the . honors the sovereign could bestow, would deprive bim of that which he valued more . than life, and tie him ‘to a bride ‘ve bad nevet . seen and hadnow ceased to desire to know. Owing to this state of Hassan’s mind, neglect, langourand disorder reigned in the camp of the workmen, which at first seemed to every one to arise from a convictien on the part of the engineer, that the accomplishment of the work was beyond his power. Some titwe passed without any change, duving which Hassan had frequent opportunities of meeting the young attendant to whom he had bétonie attached. This, however, was by-and by rematked by the people in sucha manner ay to indwce her to retire and not retern to the camp—distracting still nore! the mind of the engineer, who twas tnableto obtain any further information concerning ‘wer. The conftston into which everything wee thrown, became knot¥n%o the Inta, who soon learned, also, the real cause of the engineer’s default, and determined to take his tevenze. by putting to death the subject who hal so grostiy insulted bis sovereign. The charac+ tei of ‘the offence, however, was such that Hassan was sent for before his execution and appeared, guarded, in the presence of the inca, who sat upon his throne surronnded by his nobles. Huasca happening to be a man of moderate passions, asked the culprit in the presence of his nobles, whether he had anjthing te say before execution, it extenuation of the ¢rime he had committed by treating his sovereign with contempt. To this the young man replied that he had only to thank his sovereign forall the favors be had received, and more especially for that which he was about to receive, which would place him beyond the reach of such suffering as he had endtired since he had become ac-. quainted with the iamnocent cause of his misfortune. At the toment that the Inca was ahont to ‘commit him to the tender mercics 0° the executioners, the girl we have mentioned suddenly appeated atnong the crowd-of ncbles, dressed as she had been in the camp of the werkmen, and. rushing into the centre . of the hall, exclaimed: “Stay Inca! Arrest the hand of justice for * moment, while I put one question to the unfortunate culprit. It shall be such as the Inca will not disapprove.” From the moment of this strange apparition util the demand of the girl, there was mot a sound heard. The Whole of the nobles present remained motionless and silent.— But, had ne embarrassment overwhe'med them, the presence of their sovereign would have restrained their words and their acts. fuasca, who alone seemed unmoved, nodded assent to the demand of the girl, who now walked up to the youth, and laying her right hand apon his left shonlder, and standing a little on one sidé, that his countenance might be well seen by the Inca, said: “Young man of the hills. where the Inca is ever known, subject to Huasca, bast thon chosen the child of the vale in preference ‘o the daughter of thy sovereign ?” To which the youth, after steadfastly regarding the Inca, replied: “The will of the great Source of Light be done! The sentence of the Inca is just.” Then turning to the girl, he added: “T go now with joy to dwell where I shall await thy coming to possess thee forever.” “But wherefore couldst thou not,” then said the girl, “accomplish the work which thou hast undertaken?” “It had been done,” said the youth, “had the labor been accompanied with the hope of possessing thee.” A 2 At this reply, the young girl, suddenly throwing off her upper garments, which had hidden those that would have betrayed het true character, and taking the entranced youth by the hand, advanced up to the foot of the throne, and exclaitned: “Great father of the children of the sun, I, who thou lovest as thyself, demand the remission of the sentence against the youth now bowed down before thee, until it be known whether the great work he had undertaken can be done or not.” Inca Huasca, whose affection for his daughter was beyond _all other feelings, electrified by the occurrence, signified his assent to the proposal. A few months after this, the great aqueduct was completed, and the engineer and the princess became man and wife.
