Washington and Garibaldi.
AMERICA AND ITALY.
Can tyrants but by tyrants conquered be,
And Freedom find no champion and no child,
Such as Columbia saw arise, when she
Sprang fortha Pallas, arm’d and undefiled?
Or must such minds be nourished in the wild,
Deep in the unpruned furest. ‘midst the roar
Of cataracts, where nursing Nature smiled
On infant Washington? Has earth nu more
Such seeds within ber breast, ur Eurépe no such .
shore? [Childe Harold, Canto IV.
TO GARIBA.DI.
The earth still holds such seeds within her breast.
Europe still boasts of a Sicilian shore:—
Thou. Garibaidi! bidd’st thy land be bleseed,
And raise her drooping head on high once more.
‘We, whothy country’s bondage deep deplore,
Bid Heaven 8 best benedictions on thee wait,
As our great drama thon art acting o'er;
The world forever, whatsoe’er thy fate,
Shall thy hervic name embalm asong its great.

‘Uses of Tee.
Wecopy the following valuable suggestions (says the Repository) from Hall’s Journal of Health. They should be remember.
ed and followed. We insert them for the
benefit of our readers. Ice is too often the
cause of serious and, sometimes, fatal injury—and at the same time if properly applied,
a valuable and efficacious remedy:
In health, no one ought to drink ice water; it has occasioned fatal inflamation of
the stomach and bowels, and sometimes sudden death. The temptation to drink it is
very great in summer; to use it at all with
any safety, the person should take but a single swallow at a time, take the glass from
the lips for a half minute, and then another
swallow, and so on. It will be found that it
becomes disagreeable after a few mouthfuls.
On the other band, ice itself may be taken .
as freely us possible, not only without injury,
but with the most striking advantage in dangerous forms of disease. If broken in size
of a pea or bean and swallowed as practicable, without much chewing or crushing between the teeth, it will often be efficient in
checking various kinds of diarrhea, and bas
cured violent cases of Asiatic cholera.
A kind of cushion of powdered ice being
kept to the entire scalp, has allayed violent
inflamation of the brain, and arrested fearful convulsions induced by toe much blood
there.
Fos Crove.—Water as cold as ice applied
freely to the throat affords an almost miraculous relief; and if this be followed by drinking copiously of the same ice cold element
the wetted parts wiped dry and the child be
wrapped up well in the bed clothes, into a
@elightful and life-giving slumber.
All inflammations, iaternal and external,
are promptly subdued by the application of
ice or ice water, because it is converted into
steam, and rapidly conveys away the extra
heat, and also diminishes the quantity of
blood in the vessels of the heart.
A piece of ice laid on the wrist will often
arrest violent bleeding of the nose.
To drink any ice cold liquid at meals retards digestion, chills the body, and has
been known to induce the most dangerous
internal congestion.

Startiixe Discovery.—During the sitting
of a Court in Conneticut, not long ago, ona
very cold evening a crowd of lawyers had
collected round the open fire that blazed
cheerfully on the hearth in the bar room,
when a traveler entered benumbed with cold
but no one moved to give him room to warm
his shins, so he leaned against the wall in
the back part of the room.
Presently a smart young limb of the law
addressed him, and the following dialogue
took place:
“You look like a traveler.”
“ Wall, I supose I am, I came all the way
from Wisconsin afoot at any rate.”
“From Wisconsin! What a distance to
come on a pair of legs!”
“ Wall, I done it, anyhow.”
“ Did you ever pass through hell in any of
your travels”
“ Yes, sir, I’ve seen the out-skirts.”
“T thought likely. Well what are the
manners and customs there? Some of us
would like to know.’ ‘You'll find them
much the same as in this place—the lawyers
sit nearest the fire!”
oe .
Not so GREEN AS THAT.—A gentleman born
and bred in Cheapside, London, was lately
invited to visit a friend in the agricultural
districts. The rural aspect of the place
amused and charmed him; still be had bro’t
away frown the city his full share of suspicion, and the answers that he received to
some of his inquiries really did seem so
wonderful that he began to suspect that he
_ was being ‘“‘chaffed.” Atlasttheyapproached a meadow, in which was standing a glorious crop of hay. -The cockney gazed atit
wonderingly. It wasn't grass, it wasn’t
wheat, it wasn’t turnip tops. “ Why, whatever do you call this stuff?” said be to his
companion.,
“That! why, hay, to be sure,” was the rely.
. *: Hay! he! he! come, that’s cutting it a
little too thick. If that’s hay, just show me
the hay-corns ; come now!”

¥WeaR. A correspondent of the Wisconsin
Chief thus sums up the characteristics of
human existence:
“ All confidence is lost between man and
man. The bottom bas fallen out of everything. Shrewd business managersarecheating God in their professions, and the devil ia
their professions, and the devil in their bargains. Ginger is made out of mustard, and
coffee out of chicory. Young Hyson is raised in the cow pastures, and Young America

people’s funds absorbed by “ charitable purposes.”

Tomato Honry.—A. J. Gunnell, Rock Island county, Illinois, sends the following recipe, which he says is a very good substitute
for honey: “Cut sound, ripe tomatoes in
slices, and press the juice through a cloth.
To each pint of the liquid add one pint of
sugar, and boil the whole until of the consistency of boney, removing the scum as it
‘rises. It may be flavored with lemon or
other extracts to snit the taste. The writer
has tasted a very fine preparation of this
kind made from the European Winter Cherry or Ground Tomato, which was an excel
lent sauce for blanc mange, puddings, etc.

GUTTA PERCHA GOODS.
PRNHE undersigned having been appointed by the
Guita Percha Manufacturing Co.,
of New York, sole agents ‘for the sale of their Goods,
are now prepared to take orders from the trade, for
quantities, at the owest New York prices.
The article, Gutta Percha, is now wel: known to be
an entirely different thing from India Rubber, (with
which, however, It is often confounded,) possessing
qualities which make it useful for every } urpose to
which the latter can be applied, aad possessing other
valuable properties which that has not. Unlike India
Rubber, it is not effected by vils er acids, and is warranted not to become sticky or decomposed, in the hot. .
test climates. It also possesses that great property of
value in Robber, cheapness, costing no more, and answering a better purpose. The article of
Machine Belting,
Made by this Company. is now greatly in use among
the large factories of the East, universal testimony
having been given as to its vast superiority over India
Rubber Belting. and its equal goodness with the best
Leather article, while the cost is Far LESS. Flexibility
and Durability arehere combined. Wecan supply any
size or thickness that may be required. The
Hydraulic Hose
Vade by this Company, is very -popularcn “account of
its great strength and durability. It may be subjected
to the hardest usage without fear of its being torn or
cut by sharp stones or the rough character of the
ground. A size is now being made which is believed to
be very superior for the purposé of
Hydraulic Mining,
Combining as it dces, the qualities or STRENGTH.
FLEXIBILITY and DURABILITY: and it can be fur.
nished at a moderate cost compared with any thing
else that is capable of doing the same amount of work.
This we can supply according to order.
From the vast superiority in all itsrespects of the
Gutta Percha Clothing,
Made by this Company, large orders have veen received from the G.vernment. for the use of the
United States Army, .
Of coats. pants, riding leggins. ponchos, ete. Also, of
