Mr. Henry Hentsch, banker ef this city, has favored us with a number of cocoons of silk worms, preduced iu the garden of Mr. E. Prevost, at the San José Nursery, at San José. These are particularly interesting as the first cocoons yet grown in California, and are entitled to special notice from the fact that the repeated experiments which have been made here to this end, have at last been crowned with success, and thus a new ficid for enterprize and industry is opened to our people. For several years Mr. Hentsch has been convinced of the adaptability of our climate to the production of the mulberry tree and the silk worm. About three years ago he commenced making experiments, and imported a quantity of mulberry seeds from France. These were sent to Mr. Prevost, Che Aydraulic Press, PUBLISHED EVERY SATURDAY MORNING BAUSMAN & WATERS, Editors and Proprietors. Terms for the Paper. We daily meet these new comers in our peregrinations about the city, and judging from the jaded and travel-worn appearance they invariably present, we conclude the journey “the plains across” is now quite as arduons as when we made it in 1849. The immigrant is generally disappointed and dissatisfied with the country on his arrival here.— He seems to have started with the ideas that prevailed in 1849 and ’50—that the gold lays on the top of the ground everywhere; or that the new comer has only to intimate that he is willing to work for wages and he will be besieged at ence by a crowd all anxious to secure his valuable services, at any wages he may demand. It takes but a little experience in the country, however, to con 3 8 . partner with me in the too rosy for the day of bis coming. ffe . for eres at three different times ; but, . In addition to the Granada.and Moses Taylor, already dispatchtd to the Pacific, the Coatzacoalcos has been purchased for New Orleans parties, (into whose hands she came as security for advantes) for about $60,000—a very moderate figure. The sale was for cash. It is undetstood that she will sail for the Pacific in a few days, to take her place inthe line. The Hlinois, of het fetutn tMp will be thoroughly overhauled, and have new boiltrs put in. The Isthmus of Tehuantepec Will be used for the transit, and the detetrmination is to make the trip in eighteen days. It seems to be generally understood that the parties Who were owners and concerned in the old Sloo mail conttact, the — in interest in the (Cedar Key and ernando) Florida railroad, and several influential and wealthy capitalists at Washington and the South, with some parties here, have combined to give strength and solidity to the affair. A determined effort, backed by strong influences, will be made to get a mail contract from the next Congress, via Tehuantepec, in eighteeit days time. California Will back this application, and the hoped-for effect upon het elections may lead to strong exertions in its behalf by politicians. aoe _Enetisa ako FaeXch Naviss.—Donald McKay, the great ship-builder, writes to the Boston Commercial Bulletin some of the results of his observations in the British navy yards. The Goveiunient is now building 53 steam war Vessels, of various kinds, carrying 1783 guns, of teatlt ats many as the whole United States navy. By the mid. availed of by Mr. Prevost. vince him that sach expectations are a shade . te this source, Mr. Hentsch sent to China who with commendable seal, put them in, and the result was a rapid germination and growth, and in a little over three years they had become trees and were producing fruit. The next thing was to send for the silk worms. It will be remembered that the disease which appeared among the silk worms in France and Italy afew years ago, alarmed the producers and manufacturers so that . at Coley’s store, Main street,on they sent to China to replenish the stock ; and the agents passing through this city, we then called attention to the fact. rived here from Hongkong and took steamer for New York and thence to Europe. One of these agents, knowing the interest taken by Mr. Hentsch in the subject, gave hima number of the eggs, which were at once Not disheartened by this failure he then sent to Turkey (Bulgaria and Adrianople) and procured another lot which proved to be good, and from these and the few Chinese ones which the agent let him have, the present fot have been reared. They are pronounced by those who profess to know about silk worms, to be not only the largest, but the most delicate in texture and color ever seen, and Mr. Hentsch himself, being a good judge, thinks he never saw any equaily fine. Qur own Knowledge of the subjectis but limited; but te judge ity. Some are milk white, and othets a pale They are covered with a delicate webbing of silken threads, and within each rattles the lifeless form of the industrious little animal that has thus spun its own tomb. The long-mooted problem of the ability of our soil to produce the mulberry, and of our climate to raise ihe silk worm, is now satisfactorily settled. Grain and wiae, wool and the precious metals are a fixed fact.— Silk may now certainly be added to the precious list of our products. The price of silk has been steadly rising, with the increased demand, fot some years. More than $40,000,000 worth of the raw materia! is annually consumed in the French manufactories, and yet the demand is augmeuting. . Now when we consider that the raising of . the silk worm is at least an uncertain employment in Burope, uwing to the casualties of fain, thunder and lightning, and other tastialties which are destructive to them, and that here in California the very requisites for their successfitl production exist, it seems a foregone conclusion that this branch of industty-must soon be commienced in a land so eminently favorable. to it. It is no longer an experiment. The ball has been set in motion and it only needs a few enterprizing men to make it a general thing.— Until Cotonel Hataséthy opened np the resources of Sonoma Vailey with his experiments in grape Vines, tio one thought of going exteusively into that business. But his example has been ¢diilagious, and at presént the cultivation of the vine bids fair to overshadow everything else in that valley. It has been the sante with dozens of other things. All that was wanted was for some enterprising man to start in and his success emboldened others: California has within hetself tesources whith are yet but io their infancy ; and great as has been the progress of vine and wool-gtowing, we are inclined to think that the culture of the silk worm thay be thade to rival them in value. — The market for raw silk is unlimited. ean tlever be overstocked. The business cannot be overdone. No matter how much is raised, it will instantly couimand & price; especially as the product in Europe threatens to be cut off.
