Mach excitement exists in western New
York, along the Pennsylvania line, relative
to the recent coal oil discoveries in thas
neighborbood. Steam Engines are pow employed to raiee it. It is pumped up from
arteriag bores, in counection with water; in.
to vats wheo the oil rises to the
top ia dipped off, while the water
is drawn off from the bottom. A percentage of ten cents a gallon is retained by
the land holders while the cost of raising
not more that 22 cents. It is worth about
75 cts in acrude state. This oil is known in
commerce as “ petroleum,” or stone oil. In
the neighborhood ,where it is obtained it is
knowo as Seneca Oil,so called from the
Seneca tribe of Indians who first introduced
it to the knowledge of the whites. Until
recently, within the present age of the world
it bas been chiefly ebtained from the surface
of “ Oil Creek,” a small stream which rune
througa the regions of the present workings.
A singularity, however, has recently been
brought to light, which consists of the fact
that all through the valley of “Oil Creek,”
are found pits, hundreds and even thousands
in number, which have evidently been dug .
for the purpose of gathering this oil, after
the present manner‘ of * miniug”’ for it, but

ing query is suggested, as to who were the
peopie who dug them pits, aod for what
parpose was the oil gathered, They could
not have been dug by the present or recent
races of Indians, who have inhabited that
portion of the country for they had neither
the meaus of executing such works, nor had
must evidently bave been taken out. These
ancient workings must be considerd as anotber link in the great chain of evidence

Ma. Boiron —Agreably to promise made
on leaving Nevada, I forward you sittie account of our trip to what are known as the
“Washoe Diggings,’ Our party consisted of
five in all, We left Downeiville on Sunday
afternoon, well mounted on mules, and by
8 o'clock made a dismal looking hovel, inbabited by two Italians, which, with one
other cabin, constitate, as well as we could
discern in the eter-light, the far famed Sierra City, situated bene&tl those rugged
peaks, called the Downeiville Buttes. As
our ride must be jong and cold, and over s
scarcely visible trail to reach the next abode
we concluded to call a halt for the night.
Here, while waiting the preparations for
supper, an affair occurred, of which, I suppose you have before this, had some accoun*
and which resulted in the shooting of a man
named Nelson, who resides in the neighborhood, by Mr. Andrews. Whether the wound
. was of a serious nature I bave not been able
to learn, but presume not from the fact that
the wounded man sturted for Downeiville
that night. Early in the morning, after a
talk with the father of the celebrated “ Doesticks,” who appeared as a friend of the
. wounded man, we resumed our saddles.
This day's ride brought us into Sierra
Valley, or more properly Siberia Valley.—

wash the wound clean therewith and then
dry it; then pour upon the wound a few
drops of bydrocloric acid, becaute mineral
acids destroy the poison of the saliva. Gastell, a Saxon forester, 82 years of age bas
used this remedy, with success for fifty years.
Tux Rovixe Passion.—So strong was the
“root of allevil”’ io the minds of some of
the Northera visitors to the late execution
of Brown, that on their returu they even
got up bogue “Oseawotomie pikes’’ and
sold them to their brother eympathisers for
the genuine article.

A Nove. Racs.—Two miners recently
run @ race, barefooted, for a purse of $500,
from the Buttes above Downeiville, to that
place, a distance of some 12 or 15 miles,
over 8 102ky bill-side trail—the one arriving
first to take the purse. One of them ran two
miles at a pretty rapid pace with a fair prospect of winning, then tumbied over a precipice, and was so badly injured that he had
to be taken to the hospital. The other made
the journey with ease, pocketing the wager.

poetry; but once, for the novelty, woald wuffice, I apprehend, the most romantic.
The first gray of the morning found us in
the eaddle. in riding along the valley, we
came upon a large flock of sage hens sitting
neat the road. One weighing 44 Ibs, was
killed by Andrews, from the back of hie
mile, with a revolver. This bird and also
rabbits ionumetable were seen in this Valley and in Truckie Meadows. Those fond
of such sport would find this locality a paradise.
After a ride of thirty-five miles, we reached Huffacres, where we spent the night very
comfortably. The snow which from the
time we left Downeiville, had beea no
Teae impediment, as we found a pretty
good trail broken along the whole route,
soon increased toa depth of three or four
feet, over which no animal bad passed. We
were forced to dismount, and, after strug—
gling through the snow for six hours. reacbed this place, twelve miles more. We found
sll our Nevada friends in good health and
in the possession of immense wealth—io prospective. Little is being done, at present,
in prospecting, on account of the deep snow,
which the Indiané easy is the deepest ever
known bere. The Exchange or Wall strect,
kept by John Newman, is daily crowded
by the Bears and Bulls, where sales of
claims are conducted aud stocks disposed of
with the liveliest interest. The business of
locating claims goes on constantly, and I
hear of new discoveries of Silver, Lead,
Copper and Gold Bearing Leads. Of the
value and reliability of these reported discoveries I can say nothing except upon hearsay.
The business of analyzing all sorts of
specimens is carried on here by scientific
men, of whom there are s great number
present. These parties furnish very grat}~
fsing resalts, and Zam inclined to believe
that this country is destined to prove, in
reality, one of great mineral wealth. I
would advise all who are inclined to come
Tt, to put off the trip until the
tpring is fairly opened.

#® A bachelor friend of ours, while recently traveling through one of the lower
counties stoped for the night at a rancho by
the road side where, with kindly hospitality,
be was shown into the best lodging room in
the house. The room chanced to be the one
usually occupied by the interesting and acpomp daughter of the host, and, asa
surely Coluazbus, when he saw, at night, . ™tter of course, was graced with the usual
“that same token,” on the shore of San Sal.
vador, did not welcome its presence with
more intense delight.
The bospitable home of Mi. David Newman offered us protection for the night—
hospitable becauee of the kindly hearts of
its owners, but just in that unfinished condition in which it would be bard to say
whether you were io the house, or out of
doors—most illy conditioned either tu receive or “ expel the winter’s flow.” It was
at our service, however, with such provis—
ion as our hosts had provided for themselves
and certainly no guest of the St, Charles or
St. Nicholas, who pays his board, ever had
such occasion for gratitude. We rested with
our blankets on the floor, somewhat in the
atyle of Lochiel, with our feet to a big cooking stove, and our beads to the wall, form~
. adornments of a lady’s boudoir. Before
retiring, be sat down aud “perpetrated” the
following, which he left upon the table, and
. which we have been permitted to place io
the columns of the National.
Within the precincts of my room
Strange forms, fantastic, rise,
And shadows, sailing.through the gloom,
Rash past my wildered eyes.
First, like « scare-crow on the wall,
Appears a spectre, long and white,

ing through the Yuba Gap, and reached
Long Valley about two o’clock in the afternoon. Here we found # haystack, and
the question presented itself, whether we
should try it—that is, the baystack—for a
couch, with the chance oi freezing, or push
on to the Trackie Meadows, thirty-five miles
farther, with @ certainty of freezing. The
former seemed the most rational course and
the Council of war so concluded, after grave
deliberation. The point settled, we proceded to negociate with « neighboring campoodle of Red men, for sundry articles of diet,
in the way efarabbit—or labit, in approved
Indian dialect—and a sage ben, wherewithalto make a supper. A few dimes, judi.
ciously expended, brought our treaty toa
favorable conelusion, and other several
dimes dispensed to a big pappoose, put his
energies to work in securing a quantum of
sage brush for fuel. We were thus furnished with the requisites for a meal and forthwith set to work to prepare it. The cullna~
ry skill of Tom Andrews was here distinguished, and each, with bie spit, sat about
the Camp fire; roasting his several apportionment of the wild game. It was a meal
for a king. Good appetites made a sauce
that would defy the highest reach of the art
otisene, This over, we spread our blankets, and, in the language of the poet—
“ QOutstretehed upon the cold ground,
We oft looked up to Heaven.”
That sleeping upon the cold ground, with
the thermometer below sero, looks well in
Able cape, with darkness blends,
Ax albau too—a sacred book.
Ob, what a wretched fate is this,
To eee such sights around ;
To know, old batch, you Miss
The sum of life profound—
To know that you alone will lose
The gist of earth's best days,
Unless, e'er long you chance to choose
To ‘shift’ your beim and go in “‘staye.’
