Washee Trains in Eldorade,
‘The Coloma Times, speaking of the emigration to Washoe, says :—
Nearly every day pack trains pass through
this place, en route for the Washve diggings, from Marysville, Nevada, Aaburn,
aod other places north. Thursday last,
March 8th, there was a train passed. containing about 75 animals, from Marysville.
The atimals were to be loaded at Placervile. How happens it that all those pack
trains come this way to cross the mountains
when they have so greatly a superior route
nearer heme? Will some one inform us?
The above question has been put te, and
anewered by the press of thie County at least
a dozen times ; yet at the risk of being
thought to do a work of supererogation, for
the benefit of the ‘‘Times,”’ which seems to
be an earnest sceker after truth, we will
once more answer, and we trust our Coloma
friend will “make a note on’t.” The Union, .
from which we clip the paragraph, and which
is very industrious im seeking out all such
items, of course, will do no such thing.
Public attention was not called to the extraordinary facilities of the Nevada route
until it was too ate to do anything, last
season, to make the route available for traveling, even in the sammer, to say xothing of winter transit. Every one knows
that a road to be successfully used by loaded teams, especially in winter, must be well
supplied with houses for the accomodation
of both travelers and teams, and, im a moun:
tainous country, must be worked to some
little extent, at least.
Now it was satisfactorily proven just before winter set in last season, that the Ne. vada route could be made a far better road,
with an outlay of leas than $10,000, which
might be expended in siz weeks, than has
. been made over the Placerville route in siz
. years, with an outlay of $100,000. AccorA Jewisn Cuarain ry Coxoress.—During
the present Congress instead ofa regular
Chaplain for the House of Representatives
an invitation was extended to all the clergymen of Washington to officiate alternately.
It so happened that om the morning of the
day on which the Speaker was elected the
daily prayer was offered up by a Hebrew
Rabbi. An eastern correspondent thus speaks
of the prayer, and the emotions it created ;
* It was a wonderfal fine prayer, so solemn
and grand, as if invoked in those glorious
words which are so dear te all readers of the
Old Testiment, the blessing of the God of
Abraham, Isaac and Jacob upen the Repre—
sentatives of this country, so highly favored.
A more devoted recegnition of God’s hand
io the histary of this land, and a more earnest prayer for union and reconciliation, I
have never beard. * * * The prayer
was beard with the gratest attention by the
large concourse of spectators. At the conclasion it was almost unauimously agreed
that since the House had been in session
there bas not been offered a more devotional
prayer by any of the Chaplains who bave officiated here.

CHIVALRY.
The iron bad succeded tothe golden age.
The forms of civil society bad been usurped by awarchy, rapine and murder, Religion bad been expelled from her native
land; ber votaries made captive or slain, ber
temples destroyed and altars desesrated.—
The lingeriug rays of learning sought shelter and protection from the Church, which,
alas, but too much needed protection for
herself. In this chaotic gleom arese @ spirit of piety of bonor and of love—the spiritof Chivalry. In this spirit Religion foand her defender; honor its champion and beauty her
protector. Wrongs were righted and injnries repaired. The mother’s wail and maiden’s shriek were hushed or revenged. Orphan’s tears were dried—lawleas robbers
chastised, and the rapacious made te disgorge their ill-gotten gains. ‘Panoplied in
the spirit of Chivalry, the hearts of ite votaries knew no fear; their bodies felt no fatigue. Heat and cold, honger and ‘thirst,
were alike braved and courted in the pursuit of their calling. Tyranny and violence
trembled within their moated and castel!a-—
ted walls. Meanness sneakingly crouched
and sought abscurity. Kings. princes and
. nobles enrolled themselves in the Order,
and sought distinction and fame from its pursuit aad practice ; fer what so glorious and
exalted in that age, asa brave, pious and
courteous knight? His calling received the
blessings of religion—bis fame was sounded
by the songs of minstre! and troubadour, and
his gallant deeds received and deserved the
smiles and favors of the fair ; for under bis
protecting care, loveliness freely displayed
ber charms, and beauty was placed en love's
throne, safe from all wrongs and injuries,
save Cupid's wanton wounds.
A spirit so composed of shadows and sentiments, from which has emenated results so
real, seems notin reaaon or in human annals, until we reflect that the history of
