. POETRY. He wenld have been a Poet. (AN IDEA OF 5. B. READ'S VERSIFIEZD.) He wonld have been a Poet For his were fancies wild, And longings strange and fitful, While yet in years « child ; Upen his brow the shadows Of pensive thonght did stray, Bat the world chilled e’en at its fount The current of his lay. He pour’d his cry for sympathy; Tt fell. alas ! in vain, Drowned ‘mid the busy votaries Of wealth and fashion’s train. Lost 'mid the throng, no echo Came soothing!y to tell His words had touched a gentle chord, Or bade a bosom ewell. What recked they that in bitterness, His heart should ache and burn ; That eloquence and proud high hopes Thus into duet should turn? That fervent thoughts must thus be hushed Forever ia his breast ; In loneliness he turned away To stem the billowy crest. Twas his a simple boon to ask, And it had been denied; Without a heart to feel for him, Life’s tempest he must bide, How many a bard like him Hath fled to silence deep, To hide the conflict in their breast, To still what may not sleep. The burning dream that rise, The wealth untold of feelings pure That ewell beyond the skies, What man denied, the silent voice Of nature gave to him; The night breeze kissed his fevered brow, The pale stars burned more dim. As if they felt the heavy carse That weighted upon his heart; Aad with a soothing pow’r would fain Bid the dark clouds depart. Proud reason trembled on her throne, Fancy the sceptre held ?T was for a moment but eneugh— His gen'rous heart rebelled. B’en had no words from lips divine Forbade a vengeful ire His was a soul too great and good To glow with such a fire. What others had denied to bim Freely he did bestow, He learned that it was happiness To soothe another's woe ; To dry the tears affliction sheds, To light misfortune’s path, And teach the falt’ring one to flee From angered Heav'n’s just wrath. "Twas thus he cast away from him, His dreams of fame and love, Enough bis trials and his grief Were register’s above! At twilight hour when memory Paid tribute to the past, The pensive thoughts of buried years Would often gather fast : The lighter flow'rs of poesy Sprang*up beneath their ray, He smiled and sighed o’er by gone dreams Then from them turned away. Tarned with a heart that hid its grief From the busy world without, Te cheer the lonely sufferer And clear away each doubt. “Time swiftly fleets, alas!” he cried, **] feel upon my brow Its hand rest heavely, but ab ! I sink not neath it now. A fairer home wi! soon be mine— No longings vain are there, What for the weak applause of man Will my freed sprirt care. I teel as life is ebbing fast— I feel a secret joy, That with the tide of early years There's mixed a dark alloy. For it hath led my selfish heart Prom dreams of pow’r and pride And made me to the world give Eihat it to me denied. Till I had learned fer other sake, Cheerfal each day to spend, And look beyond this fleeting world For an unchanging Friend. To Him whose sympathy can give What the world may not bestow Peace to our spirit’ troubled tide, Cali ia each daily wee.” Now anp Tuex. serene) Lime, Lime!
