rr ee rer EE ER TE Carr. Reurvs Snoswaxern, left, with his family, yesterday morning, on a visit to the Atlantic States. The Captain was an old resident of Grass Valley, aud his social style was such, that every body liked him He was a man that always took the world by the smooth handle, looked on the bright . side of every thing, and did not appear to) care whether “school kept or not.” The first office he filled was Justice of the Peace in this place; from that he rose to be County Clerk, then Captain of the Nevada Rifles, and last, but not least, editor of the Nevada “National;” in all of which be proved himself worthy and well qualified.— . Whetber or not he will retarn to California, time alone will tell. We are inclined to the opinion, however, that he will settle down on some plantation in Mississippi, and watch . the kinky heads bob up and down in the . patch while picking cotton; and he, smoking . bis meerschaum, will enjoy himself, all over. The had obstructed the track, so that . the through mails had to be sent back to New York. j At last accounts the rioters remained victorious, and had a cannon to use in case " an attack. Two regiments of the New Jersey militia . were ordered to the scene of the riot. Also . troops were dispatched from New York. The trot over the Garden City Course between Flora Temple and Princess, was won . by the former in three straight heats ; time 2.31, 2,30, 2,264 . The ball took effect in the calfof the leg. inflicting a pretty severe flesh wound, The other affair, which was ofa more serious character, occured at John Maguire’s saloon about twelve o’clock the same night. It appears that Maguire and a man named James Mackay got into a difficulty. Mackay caught hold of a bottle whith the inten tion, it is supposed, of striking Maguire, when the latter drew his pistol, bat before getting it round in the range of Mackay it accidentally went off and wonnded a man named Mat.
