This volume was used by Hugh Murchie, Nevada City Superintendent of Streets and City Health Officer, to record copies of city ordinance violations (street, fire and health codes) that he filed between August to October 1897 and some later ones from 1899. Plus a few letters dated as late as 1902. There are copies of several of the ordinances detailed here as well.

The volume was originally a pre-printed ledger of Nevada City Billiard Table Licenses from 1880. Murchie repurposed the old book and pasted the violation citations into the pages of license stubs. Several of the handwritten copies of the ordinances were attached to book pages using brass paper binders (removed). There were many loose pages added throughout the volume and was generally not well organized. It has since suffered significant water damage, badly degrading the outside edge of the book.

The original is held at City Hall in Nevada City and was temporarily loaned to the Nevada County Historical Society, with the city's permission in May 2025, to scan and digitally preserve this old Nevada City record.
