Nones NO. 64
Each wheel spoke was hand-hewn from clear,
super-seasoned ash (No. 63), Each was fitted
into the hub and rim with a nicety that would
have done honor to the finest cabinet-maker's
art. Layer after layer of thick steer hide composed the thoroughbraces (No. 64). They were
tougher than steel springs, and a marvel of engineering, too. For these thoroughbraces enabled
the heavy coach to absorb the shocks of the road
without straining the horses.
NO. 65
On the leather-upholstered seats (No. 65) rode
the nine inside passengers; one more sat beside
the driver; and six perched on the roof...
giving a total capacity of sixteen passengers,
though more were often carried in a pinch.
