Montgomery Street, financial center of San Francisco. Not a stagecoach to be seen... . not a
creaking Spanish oxcart . . . not a bearded miner
or gaily dressed ranchero. Yet all these once
jostled each other upon this thoroughfare . . .
passing to and fro before the first Wells Fargo
banking and express office.
Today, this oldest bank in the West stands at the
head of Montgomery Street... a modern, metropolitan institution, occupied with its share of
the city's eleven-billion-dollar yearly banking
business. But, as a busy man of affairs may cherish
memories of an adventurous youth, so the Bank
has preserved many mementos of gold-rush days.
