the lens of a pioneer photographer has caught
Marshall himself, standing beside Sutter's Mill.
It was on this very spot that he picked up the
first gold. Unfortunately, he failed to note the
exact date of his find, and that little Oversight
of his caused such a heated controversy among
Californian historians in later years that the
legislature finally had to pass a special act, fixing
the date of the discovery as January 24, 1848.

NO. Oo
Here is the earliest California gold mining implement (No. 9). Not a gold pan, but a Bowie
knife, such as was used by Marshall's first followers, to dig the precious, gleaming flakes from
crevices in rocks along the river bank.
NO. 10
This weather-beaten outfit (No. 10) was once
the property of Marshall. It represents the next
development in gold recovery . . . the pick,
shovel, and pan, that brought riches to many,
though never to the unlucky Marshall.
