MERICAN POTTERS, by mid-century, had
adopted mass-production methods and were
able to supply the home market with every kind of
useful ware. Many “Fancy Articles,” as they were
called in the catalogs, were made as well; these included vases, trinket boxes, statuettes and other
mantel ornaments, inkstands and picture frames.
BR227¢10n: the potters of this small Vermont town made a wide variety of wares in
the mottled brown (Rockingham) or brown, green
and blue (flint enamel) earthenware so often referred to as Bennington ware, but they did not, by
any means, make all of it that they are credited
with. On the other hand, their output included stoneware, graniteware, “common yellow” and a variety
of porcelains, for which they are not so well-known.
THER POTTERIES actually turned out considerably more of the popular Rockingham
M, and flint-enamel types than Bennington did,
7 often in almost identical forms; and they
made all the other types, too, Outstanding were
those of East Liverpool, Ohio, and Trenton, New
Jersey, both still important potting centers today.
