Crippen, Executive Vice President When NRTA was just beginning its leadership organization over the nation in 1950, the states were divided into eight Regions with the designated leader called Regional Director. As time went on the number of Regions gradually increased to a total of fourteen. In 1959 the term Region was changed to that of Area and the title Regional Director to. Administrative Vice President. A rearrangement of the fourteen Regions to nine Areas, conforming to those used by the U. S. Department of Health, Education and Welfare, in the fall of 1961, brought about the present Area structure we have used since then. An NRTA Area Vice President was appointed by the National President for each of the nine Areas and an NRTA State Director for each of the fifty states with an NRTA Director for New York City, Chicago and the District of Columbia. New Orleans was added later bringing the total of Directors to fifty-four. Mailbag reports in the issues of the NRTA Journal have come to us from both these groups of leaders in order to present the activities of the retired teachers’ organizations by areas, states and a few large cities. To share the duties and responsibilities of increased growth and interest in NRTA, Area Asso56 Mae Gavin Charles Smith Pearl Donoho Mabel Dr. Earle O. Liggitt Genevieve O. Hilliard ciate Vice Presidents were added to the leadership and appointments made early in 1964. They share with their Area Vice Presidents in bringing the Are@® reports to you in the pages of this issue of the Mailbag. To Mr. Lyman C. Hunt, Vermont, we extend our grateful appreciation for the past year of service to NRTA and Area I as Associate Vice President. We realize the dedication one has to serve our Association in three positions as Mr. Hunt did in 1964. One issue of the NRTA Journal last year brought reports to you from nine retired teachers’ city organizations. In the Mailbag of the next issue will be presented reports from those cities where the nine Area Conferences will be held this year. With this plan of giving visibility to cities in one issue each year, all cities of the nation, having retirement organizations independent of those of their states, will have an opportunity to report to our membership. We regret to announce the resignation of Miss Margaret T. C. Murphy as Area I Vice President. NRTA owes much to her dedicated leadership which has been an inspiration to the retired teachers of Area I and has encouraged them to active participation in RTA organizations of their states. Miss Murphy has served NRTA since 1954 as leader of her Area, first as Regional Director, then as Administrative Vice President and, to February 1965, as Area I Vice President. Congratulations, Miss Murphy, for a magnificent job! To you NRTA extends grateful ap preciation for your many years of outstanding leader ship. Mrs. Maud H. Haines, State Director for Maine, has accepted the appointment to serve as Area I Vice President.
