14 House Near Red Bluff Was Home Of California's 'President' By Janet Held ; A GLIMPSE into the past rePR wards the visitor to the William Brown Ide Adobe State Historical Monument just north of Red Bluff. Situated in lush green surroundings along the bank of the Sacramento River, the monument and its artifacts enable visitors to visualize the struggle of pioneers to survive in a hostile country. The old adobe also~ is a symbol of bold moves made by the settlers which paved the way to California becoming part of the United States. Unless you are chatting with a history buff, the name William Brown Ide does not pop up frequently in conversation, Nevertheless, Ide, born March 28, 1796, in Rutland, Mass., is one of the pioneers who ushered in the American form of goyernment to California. : Recognition of his accomplishments caused steps to be taken in 1937 to create a memorial to Ide at the old adobe. There is no charge to visit the place, open daily from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Some visitors Stroll through the museum and park and simply browse. Others prefer an organized tour with historical information ~and are guided by A. W. Rose, monument supervisor. Beside the home, visitors may see a hand dug well, an adobe smokehouse, a carriage shed, a small cattle corral and a covered wagon. Through restoration the ranch looks much as it did when the Ides lived there. California was governed by Mexico at that time, but Americans were moving in by the thousands. There was talk the Mexican government would drive out all Americans, whom the Mexicans saw as a threat to their rule, possibly through a scorchedearth policy, Ide and others decided to fight. They marched on Sonoma. General M. G. Vallejo, the Mexican governor, was arrested in a dawn raid on June 14, 1845.
