robbed from the eagle his eagle secret, we shall be able to soar through the air unconcerned.” Lyman Gilmore robbed the eagle's secret and soared through the air, probably before anyone else, but lack of publicity robbed him of a high place in history. There is new evidence that Gilmore did indeed make man's first powered flight a year before the Wright brothers, But ‘Ytey gained worldwide fame because their experiments were conducted in the populated east and attracted considerable publicity. Gilmore's pre-Grass Valley work: "His interest in flying absorbed him above everything else, AND NOW, young.people learn on the land from which and it was during the summer of 1891 that he built his first glider after experimenting with wings on a bicycle. cipal John Waggoner are shown with a class, "During the next few years he studied the principle of soaring birds in an attempt to discover the secret of flight. His next model was a 10-foot sailplare built in 1891. Two years later he began work on a glider with an 18-foot wing span which he flew 500 feet at an-altitude of 50 feet, About 1895 Gilmore started designing a cabin type monoplane, (which demonstrated). such principles as retractable landing.gear and aluminum.covering.for. wings, In 1902,he,con. Four typewritten pages about the inventor and planes have been found which it Is believed Gilmore wrote himself because his signature is typed at the bottom as at the end of a letter. One section of the letter or manuscript, apparently written to deseribe 2 photograph, is dated May 15, 1902, The descrip moved to Grass Valley and started work on the airport," Gilmore Field, site of the school being dedicated Saturday, thus cannot claim fame for having been the site of man's first powered flight, 3 But it does deserve mention in aviation history for being the first commercial field in the United States and the first flying field in the west. : Earlier airports, such as the one from which the Wright brothers flew, were strictly experimental fields. The Gilmore Flying Field at Grass Valley, being first, got quite a buildup from some early chamber of commerce type promoter. It was said back in 1908 when the field opened that: "The advantages are: uniform air currents, located above the surrounding country so a plane can take off with ease and alight against the wind from alinost any direction: it is above the tule fog and below the storm clouds and but a light snowfall and visability always good for take off or landing whereas many other fields are handicapped by fog, winds and depressions and eddies from interfering obstuctions. It can be expanded to any size to accommodate any future planes, "Further; it is located at the city limits, but a few minutes "This plane shown, is a 32-foot span monoplane glider powered with a 20 H.P. steam engine and flash boiler. It was launched down a chute 100 yards long into the air by gravity, then continued in flight for some distance on its own power. "Tt made more than 20 successful flights from 100 yards to a mile or more under perfect control." The date May 15, 1902, probably either means the photo was taken on that date or the information was written then. In any event it suggests the time period during which the craft was flown, It was not until 1903 that the Wright brothers made their historic flight. Whether Gilmore was or was not first to fly, his experiments had great technical value in the development of aviation, Again from his own account of what he learned: "Gilmore mounted his motor well ahead of the cabin which resulted in helping with the location of center of gravity and air pressure and stabilizing of flight according to speed and power. Viz, A leaf falls zlg-zag to the ground. The success of flight euceescf{ul and the only means by which man can fly at all.” Gilmore appears to have authored these comments to clear up conflicting claims whether he invented the single wing airplane, The final paragraph states: "These end other planes (described in the four pages) are conclusive evidence that Lyman Gilmore was the Inventor and esimer of the Cabin Monoplane which principles are now LY. 0. LYMAN GILMORE being used by all manufacturers of air planes, "Respectively submitted, B "Lyman Gilmore” Many local people don't realize it, but Gilmore's first powered flights and his earlier experiments with glider flight were not conducted at the Gilmore Flying Field in Grass Valley; they were made as far back as the 1890s at a place called Big Meadows in El Dorado County. When the local flying field was 40-years-old, ananniversary celebration was held, A brochure from that 1947 event describes a fig. 3. ‘W tlresses: Pprnnn sires fe Prwerelor: APR.27, T3977 eeee structed a 32-foot glider with a steam engine and flash boiler. This plane was flown in May of the same year.,.In 1907 Gilmore tion follows: les in the secret of a plane to zig, but not to zag; viz: the motor lifts it up and gravity lets it drop back; but in one direction. "If ft zags, the plane stalls and crashes. And thus ends the story of man's attempt to mount the air, which proved Gilmore flew.
