Hoover — plowna Home
re
by Jack Miner
President Hoover was, as most of you know, a mining
engineer. But what some of you didn't know, he got .
much of his practical experience in the Nevada City .
gold mines from mucker up..
While he worked at the Murchie Mine, he lived,
boarded I should say, in the Joe Fleming home up on
Boulder street; you see it here. I don't think that young 4
engineer Hoover had any idea that some day he'd become
President of the United States of America. But he did,
and he promised to give everybody two chickens inthe pot
and two cars in the garage, which he didn't do, That
I’m sure of, for I didn't have either in all the years he
was President.” ‘
I've heard he was a good mining man, though. The ©
man inthe Ford, withthe white suit was Joe Fleming. For
many years Joe clerked at A. Blumenthall's store, then”
situated where the Bank of America stands on Broad street .
Goupsomeday andhavea look at Nevada City’s White,
it's still there. .
