(1946) and its' forefathers have established an enviable, continuous record as hardware dealers since the early gold rush days: Crawford & leavitt, Tom Legg & Co., legg & Shaw, Alpha Stores, Ltd. ALPHA'S "ancestors" carriod a full line of mining, commercial and household goods — many items from 1878 edvertisements are still -canesed. sold. In 1906, Alpha Hardware & Suovly Co. consolidated Lege & Shaw, N.C. and Brady & Cassidy, G.V. both long-standing substantial hardware firms, purchasing the Purcell Livery Stable on Main St. -— remodelling and stocking the new location. In 1917 the vorosent site of ALPHA on Broad St. was acquired from James Hennesy, another livery gt2ble omer. ‘Several other comoany— ewmmed stores in the gold country were victims of a mine closing, fire and a flu epidemic. A near tragic incident occured in 1913 in Nevada City. A crusty, dusty teamster drove his wagon to ALPHA to load an order of supplies for a Sierra mine. Slaking his thirst rathar than suvertising the loading of 61 x cases of exolosives and supplies}; he returned to find Woe? an additional order had been called in for 10 gallons@ >~/ of sulphuric acid. Angry for the delay; he roughly H Ae threw the case into the wagon — svilling the contents ees over the exolosives — setting the wagon afire. A bystander heroically unhitched 5 horses of the team — a drum of gasoline exploded as ths last stick of dynemite burned out. Wiracuously the loss was limited to the supplies, a horse, and the scorched front of ALPHA, From that day on ALPHA has never vermitted the loading of acids with exvlosives, © J /.
