THE TOP PHOTO shows the Nevada City Library shortly after
completion in 1907. Built primarily with a $10,000 Carnegie grant it is
now part of a multi-county library district.
The first library association was formed in 1857 by the Odd Fellows
Lodge and financed by membership fees. This library boasts one of the
finest California shelves of any of its size anywhere.
The old ivy (according to retired librarian Elsie Flynn) was removed
when it started creeping into the building in an attempt to take over.
“It was really a mess,” Elsie said.
