», in 1831, came to California’ in
J. He spent time in Sacramento,
ada City and Iowa Hill before settling

ness enterprises did so well that in
2 he trayeled to the East, returning
the same year by way of the Isthmus

na Ann Ward was traveling from Wissin on the same ship with her mother

_ Avenue.
‘e years later Mr. Marsh purchased the

{ Country Villa. Exterior elements
typically Classic in style and. aré deused on buildings in Europe and
srica from the Sixteenth through the
steenth Centuries. They. are riominally
cred to as “Italianate” because of
origins in Classic buildings in Renaice Italy.
These details are briefly: ‘the hiproofed
cupola with arched windows, the heavily
modeled and bracketed cornice, pediments
over the. windows, pine siding on the
front scored ‘to simulate stone; and the:
imitation. beveled stone quoins at the
corners of the building. The formal,
symmetrical arrangement of rooms is also
typical of the style.
M.L. Marsh was a lumberman: and ‘had
been a carpenter before coming to Calif.
ornia. His lumberyard was across Boulder
Street from “‘The Big House.” The interior
sugarpine woodwork is a tribute to his
taste and the skill and judgement of the.
builders.. The materials’ are all native:
foundations of quarried rock in a limeand-sand mortar; inner foundation walls
of local brick; cedar and red fir beams —
some 32 feet long.
Emma Ann Marsh died in July, 1873,
while the house was still under construction. The family occupied the’ house,
however, and it was the home of Martin
Luther Marsh and ‘his children well into
the 20th:Century.
In 1954, Lucille Marsh Christie, granddaughter, of M.Li Marsh, returned to
Neyada City. With her husband, James.
Bryan, she restored and rebuilt the home
as it now stands — one of. the most impressive reminders of Victorian design
and construction in the Northern Mines,
an eloquent visual reminder of the nineteenth Century.
