The first promoters on record were Crawford and Leavitt, who: were succeeded by William Johnson, who also experienced difficulty in making ends meet. The business was then taken over by George E, Turner and Tom Legg, about September 1878. The Tom Legg and Company store was located on the corner of what is now Main and Union Streets, Nevada City. In January, 1886, Turner withdrew and George C. Shaw entered into partnership with Legg. Legg died in 1886 and Shaw managed the business until Jan. 1, 1906 when it became Alpha Hardware and:Supply Co., a consolidation of Legg and Shaw Company and Brady and Cassidy, the latt E er a Grass Valley hardware firm. The new corporation purchased the liveyy stable owned by Peter °urcell heirs on Main Street in Grass Valley. _In 1912 a third store was opened at Gaston, Nevada County, above Washington, but when the Gaston Mine closed the next year the stock was moved to Alleghany, Sierra County. The company seemed to have a liking for old livery stables as two years after its entry into Alleghany, it purchased one that was owned by H, L. . Johnson, the discoverer of the famous Tightner Mine. Another . store was purchased in Forest but was closed when a fluepidemic . ‘ struck the town and carried off more than one-third of the population including the store manager and his assistant, The Alleghany store was sold in 1947, In 1917 the present site of the Nevada City store was purchased, Again from a livery stable. ‘he site was known as the James Hen/ nessy Livery Stable. a.
