A Tree Goes to Washington
fn Sunday'sS.F. Chronicle-Examiner, Feature
writer George Murphy gave a saber rattling account of the controversy of the President's
Christmas Tree. Did it come from Nevaia
County or did it come from Placer County? Now
that is a right big question. As writer Murp:
put it the thing-willnot be settled until LSd
makes his Christmas address at the lighting of
this NEVADA County tree in Washington on December 16th. LBJ is scheduled to push a button
which wi'l light up this beautiful speciman from
our County and say a few words about its origin.
To those who doubi the sceneof our Tree's growth;
‘we Say come on 19 nese and we will ghow you ihe
stump, and tne scars on fellow trees, where it
was felled.
This can become a very serious matter for who
is not so proud of his product as not to proclaim
when its legitimacy is indoubt. We have searched
ba for our copy of "Only God Can Make A Tree."
The truth is he did a grand job on this one and
righthere inour mountains. We do credit Placer
County with shipping the tree for surely most
everyone knows, Colfax in Placer County has tie
nearest railroad shipping point and from there
the Tree went to Washington.
As we told George Murphy when he was in our
office, ''We do not think we ought to go to war with
Placer County over a tree. There are enough .
trees in Nevada County to take care of everybody."' There is one growing for Ronald Reagan,
Should he ever need it, even Lassie would find
living to his liking right here among the big pines.
