Rich diggin's were her discovered in 1849 by a Frenchman from Frenchman's Bar on the river below the tom, and the otwm takes its name from the rude encloseure which he constructed to hold his mules. The tom grew, and in 1852 certain enterprising citizens brought in water by a ditch from Shady Creek, and prosperity followed as the rich surface gravels were laid bare. The discovery of important Hill dig ins on the slopes above the tow led to the construction of a second ditch in 1853, and a third two years later at one time the citizens sought to change the naxe of Franch Corral to Carrolton, but 44-has-vexatred.
