What is left of French Corral is scattered along its winding street
in a picturesque canyon near the lower (or western) end of the San
Juan Ridge. Rich diggin's were her discovered in 1849 by a Frenchman
from Frenchman's Bar on the river below the tom, and the otwm takes
its name from the rude encloseure which he constructed to hold his
mules. The tom grew, and in 1852 certain enterprising citizens
brought in water by a ditch from Shady Creek, and prosperity followed
as the rich surface gravels were laid bare. The discovery of important
Hill dig ins on the slopes above the tow led to the construction of a
second ditch in 1853, and a third two years later at one time the
citizens sought to change the naxe of Franch Corral to Carrolton, but
44-has-vexatred. French Corral it was chrrstened and French Corral Lt
has remained. During the hydraulic mining era, this locality became
well-lmowm. It was at the western end of the rich San Juan Ridge deposits, add eventually beeame water reached it wnaich had its source
more than 60 miles to the east in the high Sierra,
