scenic beauty
Captured in soft light of late afternoon,
Marilou Stirnaman’s cover painting of the
old French Corral School attests both to her
skill and the scenic beauty of Western
Nevada County.
Built as a hotel in 1855, the wooden
Structure became a schoolhouse 21 years
later, and featured a custom bell cast parually from donated silver dollars. Today it
stands alone and empty in a field.
A member of Pioneer Art Club, Marilou
holds an art and education degree from San
Jose State, and has taught elementary and
adult ed classes in art.
Her works won “best in show” awards at
the Nevada County Fair in 1967 and 1969.
“Nevada County is a painter’s paradise
in its history and changing seasons,” says
Marilou. “And I love it.”

then-a school
The French Corral School now stands
lonely in a field, its rooms devoid of life.
Built as a hotel in 1855, the wooden structure became a schoolhouse 21 years later.
It was the pride of the community, . #
whose members sent to New York State fora es

were taught in the building until 1942. Nine
years later, the county-owned school was put
on the auction block, rousing the of
residents. :
Mrs. Reno Thatcher — a former French
Corral schoolgirl — purchased it and donated
the structure to the town for use as a community hall.
