This picture of the Farrelley. family was taken after the home had been : enlarged to seven rooms . Residence of the Bill Browning Sr. family since 1955, . the home burnedtothe ground along with most of the Browning's furniture and sonal effects. FRENCH CORRAL---. r of Nevada County's 100-yearold homes was lost to fire Saturday morning when the seven room residence of Bill and Lucille Browning burned, Rapid response by the North SanJuan Fire Department and the Shady Creek Division of . Forestry station was not e~. nough tohalt the blaze which was assumed to have started from a stove. The house was situated one -half mile from here on the Birchville Rd. The browning family was out of the house when the fire was discovered by Lucille Smith, next door neighbor, who summoned help. . Fire Razes Pioneer Home In French Corral pad pet oe & 162 . The Brownings joined neighbors shortly after the alarm in trying to save belongings Ignoring a dresser drawer with $140, Mrs. Browning managed to rescue pictures of her children. She had to be forcefully removed from building moments before it collapsed. Outside, Mrs. Browning fainted from smoke inhalation and the effects of heat, but she suffered noserfous injuries. Except fora few bundles of clothing and some odds and ends of badly scorched furniture, the Brownings lost everything. They expressed thanks, however, thatno one perwas injured in fighting the . fire. The family is staying with their sonBillJr. andhis wife, also residents of Birchville Rd., while they plan to rebuild, The loss of the home was . doubly tragic because it was . . one that was rich in historicial value to the area. . The date of construction of the original three rooms “is not known, but it is believed . to have been about 1856. . A miner, Michael Farrel. ley, just over from Ireland,’ . 1862 and enlarged it by four rooms, It remained in the Farrelley family until 1955 when it was purchased bythe Brownings. Lucille Farrelley Smith told some of the history that revolved around the home. ~ Thomas McGuire, father of surveyor Carlos McGuire, boarded with the family in ‘the year 1894 whilehe taught schoolinFrench Corral. The lot that the house was built on wasthe first lot Thomas McGuire pegged out whenhe became a surveyor.
