Sunday new, oldand past residents of historic French Corral got together for their
annual picnic and gab-fest. The meeting
place was this 104 year old school house.
Built in 1857 it started out life as a hotel
and until its abandoment 20 years ago was
incontinuous

tower mysteriously
disappeared and did
not reappear until the property was purchased by Mrs. Reno Thatcher of Reno Nevada and deededback tothe community. It

A beef barbecue and the
renewing of old friendships
were the highlights of last
_ Sundays annual French Corral homecoming and picnic
held at the 104 year old
schoolhouse.
Three sisters, Mrs. Flora
Clymo of Benicia, her twin
_ Mrs, Fanny Moulton, 81, of
French Corral and their older
sister Mrs. Lena McCarthy ,
83, of Oakland whose ages
‘totaled 245 years were the
stars of the show. However,
‘their longevity boasts were
slightly dimmed by Kate
Broyles of Sacramento, aged
. 94! All attended the French
_ Corral School.
The Mesdames Clymo,
Moulton and McCarthy were
town belles more than 60
/years ago when the town
boasted a population of more
than 150 persons. Today 20
_ persons make French Corral
‘their home. . It is interesting tonote that
. the 150 people who took part
in the celebration, most of
. whom were former pupils of
the school, is the same as
‘the 1900 population figure.
. The old school building
(pictured above) was con~
\structed in 1857 as a hotel.
As placer mining activity increased it was converted intoa school house and served
the children of the community more than 80 years. —
‘The homecoming is held
‘each year with the proceeds
. going to keep the structure
in repair.
