Tho most of tho rock ved has been from tho Liberty ledge, yiclding about $20 a ton. " ine &vostamp mill was built last year, near Eurcka, by Jackson and others. It was intended for custom work, but for somo reason was run but agshort time. Tho frame was broken down by the snow last wintor, and tho mill is now a wreck, There aro numerous othor ledges in tho Eurcka district proper, which oxhibit favorable indications, so far as they have been prospected, and sqmo of which aro being thoroughly and systematically opened. Among tho latter, we may mention the Birchville, situated on the South Fork, and owned by Henry Everctt and others, of Birchville, Bridgeport township ; tho Veatch and Powell, situated near tho Birchville, and on which o mill will be built this season ; also, the Dillonand Ruskel ledges, near the Black & Young, owned by San Taacieed capitalists, which are now being opened by an extensive drain tunnel.’ y The Mohawk,: Booth, Eclipso, and others, havo yielded ore that has paid well for ‘working:,-! yt es In 18562 fourstamp mill was built by’ Judge Walsh and ‘Colonel Raymond on ine National ledge, two miles west of town. ‘fho.mill was run for a year or two, a portion of the timo being Jeascd, and the rock is understood to have yielded fair returns, though we have not been able to obtain any information of the amount. ake work was suspended in 1856 or ’57, and tho mill was destroyed by fire in 1859, :. The Grizzly ledgo is situated in Devil’s Canon, four miles west of Eureka, and was purchased by the Eagle Company, of Hartford, about tho beginning of 1866. The company erected a five-stamp mill at the ledgo, in the fall of the samo year, but being unprepared for winter work, the mill was-run but little until May last, since which timo it has been running steadily, and with favorable results. Tho ledge has been opened by two tunnels, the upper tunnel having been run 160 feet on the vein, and tho other 250 feet. Tho vein has an averago width of four feet, and {g 60 situated, that with proper arrangements, and 2 larger mill, fivo and six dollar rock can be worked with profit. Tho present mill is run by a hurdy-gurdy wheel, and was intended for the purpose of prospecting and thoroughly testing the ledge, . Another battery of five stamps will bo added to the mill this summer, and should the prospects of the mine warrant it, the company will erect a larger mill. Tho National and Grizzly ledges are not in tho Eureka district proper—the country rock being slate, and the only quartz veins yet discovered in tho slate formation of ’ that region, so far as wo have information, that have exhibited peamtien: fayorable ee to test an outlay of a to develop.
