Birthplace of Industry : The Zellerbach branch of the consolidation had its origin at Moore’s Flat, Nevada County. California. The annual report before the atte does not go into detail as to the origin of the vast concern, But it is of common knowledge and that the firm had its beginning in the packs »of two peddlers of small articles who carried their wares through the mining country on , ‘their backs, At Moore’a Flat, it would appear, 2 they set up a small establishment which grew and grew, and overflowed to San Francisco and other cities and, finally became a part of the high consolidation mentioned. Why did those plodding brothers tarry at Moore’s Flat with their enterprise in preference to numerous other aspiring towns and camps of this region? No explanation is at hand. But several of the present-day high officials claim the Yuban Fork or Nevada City as their birthplaces. They have gone far but they have not forgotten their humble beginnings. An example is J. Y. Baruth, vice-president of the great Crown Zellerbach. A native of Nevada City, it was he who financed the purchase of the files of the Transcript which now grace the public library. In its early and —ent as —=—@ A920 money-stringent days the firm of Zellerbach — supported The Union in its expansion plans and perhaps made possible the publication as it appears at this time. It is certainly something of an incident that the aspiring paper firm of Zellerbach which became the Crown Zellerbach should have had its origin in the present vanishing town of Moore’s Flat.” ng M-S”.
