The places named were in the Sweetlind School District wmtil
1872 when a schoolhouse was built in Sobastapol and they
then became a part of that District.
James Sweetland's home southeast of town and south of
Sweethnd Creek was about a mile from town and Henry Sweetlind'!s
home was on the hill south of town built, we are told, in
Southern style, The long walk to the house and a number of
large oak troos made a fine setting for tho home, Here many
parties were given for the flite of li, San Juan and sane of the
other towns, Tho bricht lichts fra tho Jackeoelanterns in
the trees and decorations and an occasional strain of music
heard fran a distance used to £111 our childish hearts with
wonder, James 0, Sweetland won sone distinction for himsolf
when in 1878 he was nominated by the Democratic party and
electod to the office of Assemblyman.
Henry Sweetland never to our lmowledge acquired any special
honor but his wife did win for herself considerable praise. She
was. a fine planist and traned many scholars to play tho piano,
many of them becaning good musicians, Her piano was for many
years the only one in the town of Sweetland, Mrs, Sweetland,
we believe was the only teacher of music until in the early 70's
Profes sor Davis came to tho town and had a goodly share of
music seholars from Sen Juan to Prench Corral, Sme time later
yg, Sweotland sold their piano to a family in Sweetland and
moved to parts unlmown, Prof, Davis married end settled in lM,
San Juan, but continued to give piano lessons up and down the
ridge frou Bloomfield down the ridge to French Corral and later
had a cless in Nev, City.
On Buekeyo Hill were three families with cood homes owned
by BE, G Mull, General Zvans and Jacob Finistoerwald, owner in
the Buckeye mine, He also owned a fair sized vineyard and
orchard, made his own wine, and enouch to supply much of the
male population of the town whofrequented his home,
At gone time between 1858 and 1862 the partnership of Broderick
and Hiscox in the saw mi11 was dissolved and the mill was
removed to Columbia H111, Broderick being its sole owner and
Hiscox turned exclusively to mining on Buckeye Hill.
The Buckeye Mine
We have no idea how long the Buckeye man had been working when
the Hiscox family came in 1858 but Imow that it had paid well
at times. Hydraulicking was the method used but instead of the
Monitor used at a later date, throo small hose were used and
although quite powerful wore not suffliele tly so to loosen
enouch of the hirh bank, so drifting was resorted to, and
small tunnels were run (they were called drifts) on a level
with the floor of the mine into the bank, sometines two or three,
