The present Columbia Hill school house was completed on Mareh
265 1875, and Mr. Je Ge OMNeil was named the first teacher. Pupils
ranged from five years 91d to eighteen years of age. The average
daily attendance averaged forty or fifty students. Older girls
assisted the geacher with the instruction of the Little ones.
High school courses were taught late in the day, and even at night
to accomodate those workirg in the mines.
Je Ge O'Neil was greatly loved by his pupils, and renained friends
with then throughout his life, visiting then when they were grow
and settled in various parts of the state.
His romance with Kate Wood occurred in Columbia Hill. Kate was
the daughter of Jerry Wood, a boarding-house keeper, whose place

On their wedding day as their bugsy pulled out of totm to make the
trek bb Nevada City where the marriage cerenony was porformed, the
children met enmass to wave them off.

The ONTeils later settled in Nevada “ity, theix home now con3

verted into a Baptist Church at the corer of Main and East Broad
Streets. From Geacher 0 "Neil became the principal of the Nevada
City Elementary School, and Lator, a Superintendent of Schools.
My mother, Lavra Fowler, attended school in Columbia Hi11 in 1876.
As a first grader she was very impressionable, and some of her
reminiscences are as follows?
Margaret Coughlan came to school with a string of asafetida hung
