In 1849 a Frenchman built a corral for his mules in this Nevada
County spot. Within the year rich gold deposits were discovered and
by 1854 French Corral was a roaring town of 2000 people. In the
building pictured here one end of the telephone line, descrihed by
a writer as “the world’s first long distance telephone line,” was opereee ated. It was the office of the Milton Mining and Water Company,
