French Corral:
ireasure’s lure
brought miners
It was 1849 when a Frenchman chose a
pastoral Northwestern Nevada County spot
for his mule corral. Soon rich gold deposits
were found nearby,
Miners flooded in until, in 1854, French
Corral was a booming town of 2,000.
The town at one time boasted the largest
Chinatown in the west; while the world’s first long-distance Phone line had its terminus
there.
In 1853, French Corral had 70 houses,
two hotels, a Store, bakery, salodn and post
office. The Anti-Debris Act of the early
1880's killed the area’s hydraulic mining inmunity on the western end of San Juan
Ridge, condemning many of French Corral’s
buildings to perish slowly with age.
