Valley at the recent annual con~
ference held on the campus of the
College of the Pacific.
‘A reception for the Janzens was
held Friday evening in Wesley
Hall.
The sermon subject for Sunday
morning will be “In Partnership
With God,” and Sunday evening
will be: “The Man Who Came toa
. Dinner.” The anthem for Sunday
morning will be: “Bless This
House.” Ed Farley will sing
“Bling Plowman.” Sunday evening the anthem will-be: “The
Child of a King.” a
The new Methodist minister is
a graduate of Reedley High
School, Reedley College, Fresno
State College and the Candler
(School of Theology. at Emery University, Georgia. ©
Before coming to Grass Valley
he served as an associate minister
at. the First Methodist Church in
San Jose, the College Avenue
Methodist Church in Palo Alto and
just recently completed four years
at: Sanger, California.
‘Mrs. Janzen is a graduate of
Fresno State, College where she
received a kindergarten , teaching
credential. Her home is in Merced, The Janzens have one’ daughter, fourteen months old named
Deborah Sue.

of ‘asons of California, will be
held at 2 p.m, Tuesday, June 26,
at the Hooper Weaver Mortuary in
‘Grass Valley. :
The Rey. Cedric Porter, . rector
‘of Trinity Episcopal Church of Nevtada City, will officiate at the chapel
rites, Members of the Masonic fradernity and his own Masonic Lodge,
Nladison No, 23, F. and A. M, of
Cirass Valley, will conduct the Masonic burial ritual. Cremation will
follow at East Lawn, Sacramento.
_ Judge Jones-as he was universally called throughout the county,
died at the Jones Memorial Hospital at 1:30 p. m. Friday, June 22,
following several weeks of hospitalization and several days of
critigal illness.
Long Legal Career
Last member of the family of
early Nevada County pioneers, Dr.
and Mrs. W. C. Jones, Judge
George L. Jones achieved esteem
and distinction in the field of law,
serving a total of 26 years on the
Nevada County ‘Superior Court
bench. His brothérs achieved distinction in the field of medicine,
in following the’ career of their
father.Judge Jones, in addition,
became one of the better known
farternal. men of California by
reason of long‘years and service to
Masonry, Odd* Fellowship and the
Native Sons of the Golden West.
He was a 50 year member of
Madison Lodge, No. 23, F. and A:
M, and served the order as Grand
Master in 1926-27. His zeal for Masonry took him throughout the
state for ceremonials and talks up
to‘ recent: months: He was a 50
year. member of Grass Valley
Lodge’ No, 12, 1._ 0. QO. F. which
he had’ served as a Past Grand
Master. He likewise held 50 year
membership in Quartz Parlor, No.
58, Native Sons of the Golden West
of Grass Valley _which, he had
éarlier served .as president and
trustee. His fourth *'50.year’’ recosnition was that as ‘a member of
the University of California Alumni

Member of Famed Class
Judge Jones was a graduate of
'Grass Valley High School with
the famed and distinguished class
of 1889, He graduated from the
University of California at Berkeley
in 1895 and Hastings Law College
in 1897. Judge Jones returned to
‘Grass Valley to practice and in
1900 became associated with the
late Lloyd P. Larue in a partnership law firm. This partnership
continued during the years he served as city attorney and later election as district attorney in 1902.
He became judge of the Superfor
Court in 1908 and served until 1925,
resigning to become president of
ithe Nevada County bank, When this
institution merged with the Ginannini banking interests, he became
their first president in Nevada City.
Returned to Bench But. banking was not for Judge
Jones. He returned to law as a
legal partner with Frank G,. Finnegan in Nevada City and in .1938
was returned to the Nevada County
bench. He served until his retirement in 1947. He operated the Jones
Memorial Hospital in Grass Valley
after the passing of his brother
Dr. Carl Power Jones in 1944.
Judge Jones was a Grass Valley
resident until his marriage to Miss
Helen Croker Mott of Sacramento
who survives him, in 1905. The
young couple took up Nevada City
residence and within a short time
‘pought the house at 236 Nevada
‘street, which became their home
for the next 50’ years. Here the
couple’s two daughters were reared
to responsible womenhood, Returning home: this week due’ to the
critical illness and death of their
father are the daughters Miss NanAssociation. He was also a member of Grass Valley Chapter No. 18,
kh. . A. M.; Nevada Commandery
No. 6, Knights Templar and the
‘Nevada County Historical Society.
