Joseph Y. Baruh was ‘one ofl seven children born here to Aaron and Theresa Baruh, among the mostly esteemed and respected pioneers of Nevada City. Joseph’ attended grammar school here, and graduated as one of 20 mem: vers of the Nevada City High School class of 1885. Twenty years later at a class reunion, members and faculty gathered for a reuion without the loss of a single one by death. Joseph and his brother Marcusi Baruh worked at various mercantile houses in Nevada City. Their sister ‘Jennie, now Mrs. Isadore Zellerbach, was active in social jand welfare activities of the city. Joseph originally proceeded to Reno to engage in mercantile! work and later was induced to go; to Los Angeles to take over the southern California end of the newly established Zellerbach company. He sérved as vice president of Zellerbach Paper comjpany from 1931 fo 1951 and last month was elected director-emer‘jitus. He and Miss Aima Hecht, daughter of Rabbi Sigmund Hecht, were married in 1902 and celebrated their 58th anniversary Thursday. Mr. and Mrs. Baruh visited here in the early months of 1956" being interested in the proposed new hospital and learning first hand of the plans. This visit was followed. by a check for $35,000 from Mr. Baruh and his sister’ Mrs, Zellerbach. She»was the sister of Mrs. Kate, Hauffman of West Branch, Iowa and Charles Lutz, Stockton, Calif.,; and is survived by 12 grandchild-. ren, 24 great grandchildren and 7 great great grandchildren. . She was born in Nevada City, October 9, 1865, the daughter of Bernard Lutz who had come here in 1860 and operated a shoe store
on Broad street. after his store was burned out in the great fire of 1863, Lutz opened and operated! a shoe repair shop. In 1883 Annie Lutz married William M. Browning, who passed away in 1916, They had three children, Willie, Aaron and Fred, all deceased. She was an honorary member of’ Pocahontas, a past officer of Neva Rebekah and a member of Neighbor of Woodcraft. ‘ During the flu epidemic of 1918 she took up practical nursing and followed that for many years.
