The death of the former resident
temoves a generously minded, kind
and sympathetic woman from _ the
‘large family membership and brings
genuine grief to the even larger coterie of friends and former neighbors, who had come to look upon her
as the epitome of friendship and
neighborly virtues, ~~ ; :
Mrs. Bartell was born at Galena,
Illinois, November 10, 1852, one of
a family of. fifteen children of the
late Richard and Eliza Ford. Mrs.
Bartell was a sister of the late Henry
Ford of Grass Valley.

RALPH BUCHANAN
‘SUPERVISOR DISTRICT FIVE
Ralph C. Buchanan, _newly-seate
Supervisor of District 1, arrived in Nevada City in 1954. He
had been operating a machine
shop in Hawthorne, but had planned to move to northern California. While visiting Grass Valley
he and his wife Gladys were fortunately directed to Nevada City.
Before leaving that same day,
they were the new owners of th
City Market at 303 Broad Street,
which they still own and manage
in a friendly,small-town manner.
Colorado as his
native state, and was educated
in Durango schools. He and his
brother operated a flying school
in Montrose for seven years, and}
Ralph holds a commercial certificate with flight instruction
rating. There have been over
5000 flying hours chalked up to
his credit. His ground school
ratings cover navigation, aircraft, aircraft engines, and
civil air regulations. He learned to fly on a field that was
located at an elevation of 6800!

Ralph claims
Ralph has served on the Nevada
City Planning Commission for the
past three years the only public office held prior to his
election to the Board of Supervisors. He has definite ideas
about what he feels is best for
Nevada County. He emphasizes the
prime importance of employment-a continuous thorn in the county
side. He approves of a certain
amount of light industry being
established locally, but warns
that a problem greater than the
one existing could develop if
care and caution are not exercisHe states we must not deed. ;
stroy our natural beauty, historical heritage and recreational
opportunities.
