A few columns back I wrote of the young lady who sa. on George Hearst'knee. George wasa gold panner in NC in 1852 andwent on to Virginia City to become the first millionaire from the Comstock, Later he founded the great newspaper empire. Now 1852 was 109 years ago and to report that this young lady, now mellowed with the wisdom of many many years of history as the west was won, isstillliving in NC sounded maybe just a little incredulous. So I got 3 written requests and 4 telephone calls for a picture of Charlotte Webster Beemer, now living at 238 Lost Hill Phone NC 265 4580. Here she is with Bob Wyckoff's portrait, capturing all the dignity and charm of this lady who has seen so much and remembers mostofit, I'mmnotthe one who is going to tell you how oldshe is but a clue on May 27, 1962 her years will add up to a sweet sixteen. And Hearst was not the only famous Westemer she knew. When she was 16 years old she remembers well the lunch she had with William Cody, old Buffalo Bill himself. Her many talents include being a dance instructor for 16 years. The Union. 14 L) Daughter of a newspaper owner, she maintains a daily keenness in the world about her. She has just finishing . reading Attorney General Robert Kennedy's book on labor rackets. She wants, for the good of America, for Pres, Kennedy to be a success, She just wishes he would go a little slow andnot beso proud of his ability to make snap judgments, Wesaw Charlotte at the Jane Christie-Peter Palches wedding (Lucille Marsh's daughter) and later at ‘the reception at the Boulder St-manse. What fun to sip champagnewith her, midst a host of male admirers, exchanging quip for quip. You asked for her picture, Here it is, Its a.lot more enjoyable to talk to her in person. For sparkle, kindness, tolerance, alertness and wit give : me Charlotte Beemer. It would be a better America if L we had more like her. fetes ee OF. (7, (944 CALIFORNI. .
