Rogers Killed in
Mendocino Crash
A violent headon collision « tt
Highway 101, three miles soutli of
Laytonville, Mendocino county
yesterday killed d ‘
well known local Clamper chief
and historical advocate; his wife,
Geneva, former postmistress of
Rough and Ready, and a woman
passenger in the other car. Four
more persons, all occupants in the
other vehicle, were hospitalized,
three with serious injuries.
The Rogers were returning from
Roseburg, Oregon, where they had
visited their son Vincent Rogers),
and family. According to the California Highway Patrol report,
Rogers’ car crossed the white
line and collided with a car driven),
by‘ William Wilson of Empire,
Ore. According to Rogers’ .son
this morning, witnesses believe
Rogers senior suffered a heart attack just before the accident. An
autopsy is being held today by the
deputy coroner of Mendocino county to determine if possible the
cause of the accident.

Johnson, Lawndale, Los Angeles

Mrs. Johnson’s 20-month-old
daughter, Deborah, suffered only
minor injuries.

Clampus Vitus, and spent the past!
ten years actively reviving the,
Clamper fraternity of the gold,
rush days.” :
He was an active member of,
the Nevada County Historical As-;
sociation, Grass Valley lodge ofj
BPO Elks, past president of the},
Highway 20 Association. He au-},
thored a historical book of the local gold rush tales. }
“Surviving besides son, Vincent;

of Santa Clara and Alma Baker)
of Sacramento and other relatives.
Geneva Rogers, postmistress of
Rough and Ready from 1948 to
1955, accompanied Rogers on his
many Clamper representation visits. ‘
