LONG ACTIVE IN
Sorrow spread over the entire
community yesterday with tite quick
spreading news of the sudden ceath
of Miss Katherine M. Curtis, ivell
knowir resident o alton street.
In contrast to the activities of her
busy life, death came quietly and unsuspectingly Friday Morning at 6
o’clock as she slept,Katherine M. Curtis, known affecActive Episcopalian
' She was a:devout Episcopalian and
one of the outstanding members of
the Emmanuel Episcopal Church in
‘this city. .A/ devoted attendant at
‘Services her activities:included Guild
and Sunday school classes with equal
interest. A sister and lifelong companion, Miss Annie Curtis, with
whom the deceased made her home
at. 418 Dalton street, is left to mourn
her passing,

well known locally.

The deceased spent her entire lifetime in this city, attending public
schools and receiving an education
which fitted her in later years for
the position of bookkeeper. In this
eapacity she will be well remember@d as a long-time and highly valued
bookkeeper accountant for the firm
if Gill-Miller and company, moricians and furniture dealers, which
firm passed out of Grass Valley’s
business life several years ago.’
With termination of the Gill-Miller firm the deceased entered a life
of commercial retirement. However,
her activities in other channels
bloomed with renewed activity as
she applied herself vigorously to
church work—a devotion marking
her entire life-time, and activities
of benevolence and humanitarian nature. tenia he

always lingering for the warmth of
her ready smile, her friendly greeting and refreshing wit. To know her
was to know a good and true friend,
and the roster of these friends is today without number.

Chapman was born in Nevada
City on June 11, 1899 and was the
second of five children bora to
Chester Warren Chapman, past
worshipful master of the
Nevada City lodge, and past
matron of the Evangeline
Chapter, Margaret Helen
Chapman.
Both of Chapman’s
grandfathers were members. of
the masonic lodge and he '
bacomes the third generation of
California masons in his family,
Chapman’s paternal
grandfather Allen Chapman was.
born in New York and at the age
of 13 traveled alone to Nevada
City where he eventually
married. Both he and his wife
practiced dentistry and she was
the first woman dentist in the _
State. She received her license in °
Sacramento and it was marked
number one.
The Chapmans’ son, Dr. C. W.’
Chapman, also entered
dentistry and married Margaret
Helen Organ. Both were born in
Nevada City and they raised a
family of four boys and one girl
in a house on Sacramento Street.
The children were Allen, also a

He then went to the University of
California at Berkeley and
received a Bachelor of Science .
